Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Label Layout not changing size when I change Options

I am having some trouble setting up labels for printing. I use an inkjet printer that prints directly to the piece and am trying to change the size of the piece in my layout so that the printer and computer talk to each other correctly. I currently am trying to change my current label from 8.5" wide to A7 width (7.24"). I right click on the background of the layout, choose Properties and on the Page tab set the size to Envelope A7. In the Width and Height boxes it shows the correct size (greyed out) but when I apply that, the background on screen still remains 8.5". I have tried exiting the Design mode, saving it on exit and then reopening the layout but it's still on 8.5".

I am using A5v11 with latest released build (not the release candidate) on Win XP sp 3 (with all updates). Any suggestions?

Hmm, that's odd. Just did exactly the same things and it looks like in the Preview pane it is behaving as it should (7.24" size by appearance). However, when I went back into the Design window after the Preview, the background still shows as 8.5". This makes it difficult to align the address block onto the position needed for the mail piece....

Good thing we have forum support available. Been 3 weeks and no help at all. :-(
In case you're wondering what the issue is, in Design mode for Labels, when I go into Properties and change the size of the Page and then exit properties, the background area does not change. So if I printed the list onto Letters last time and now want to print to Postcards (4x6), I have no apparent way to get this to work. Even worse is if I printed onto postcards last time and this time I need to print onto letters, I can't move my address block far enough to the right as the layout ends at 6".

When I Preview the label after making the change, the dotted line to indicate the edges of the piece looks like it is right, but the white dotted background in Design Mode never changes and makes it difficult/impossible for me to arrange the address block properly.

Changing the size of the page does not affect the labels. Suppose you based your label on Avery 5095. That specification calls for labels 2-1/3 by 3-3/8; 2 across. Doesn't matter whether those labels are affixed to a carrier sheet 8x10 or 11x17. The label specification remains the same.

          Shawn,

why are you reconfiguring the label layout between print runs? Most would create and save separate custom formats, then switch between them, rather than use a single format and modify it each time.

If you can use a report rather than a letter then you can import the label definition into a new blank report and reaize to suit. The import process creates a report based on "one" label with the fields from the label in place.

I'm not talking about the length of the label itself. I am using an address block (label) that is 1" x 3.5" as I am using IMB barcodes on the mail. However, the address block needs to be arranged onto a background that is roughly the same width of the piece I am mailing in order to center the block correctly and have the printer recognize the piece flow correctly.
It used to be when I first installed A5v11 that when I changed the Page size, the white background would change to represent the new page width. It no longer does that.

I print addresses onto mailpieces using an inkjet printer that feeds each piece separately. I work with multiple clients but the format of each of their databases is almost identical, therefore I setup a label once and then Copy To the new database/client for each new mailing. However, not all mailpieces are identical, so I need to re-position the address block to accommodate the current piece.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean by creating and saving custom formats and switching between them.

Try doing that in any of the labels in AlphaSports. Works for me. If it doesn't for you I would suggest reinstalling Alpha.

I may have misspoken. When in design mode and you change the page size, the white dotted background of the label itself does not change nor should it. The white dotted background represents the layout area of each individual label, not the page.

The background of the page never changes but the ruler indicates whether the labels chosen will fit into the page size chosen.
