Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    XP vs. Win7 puzzle

    OK, figure this one out....

I open the registry with regedit.exe, go to "HKEY_local_machine\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProductName" and find the value "Windows 7 Professional". (which is what I have)

Then I go to the A5 Interactive Window and run registry.sys_get() on the same registry key and it returns "Microsoft Windows XP".

See attached screenshot of the registry editor over top of the A5 Interactive Window.

Edit: It gets weirder - I just now did a search of the registry looking for "Microsoft Windows XP" and it's not in there!

    Cal,

I tested it under V10 and that shows what's in the ProductName, in my case "Windows 7 Home Premium"
    Perhaps a V11 issue?

      Thanks for the feedback Jo.

It gets weirder! Actually, it was in v10 that I found the problem but I wasn't paying attention to that when I posted it here. Further testing shows that it works correctly (displays Win7) in A5v11 and A5v7 but shows XP in versions 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10.

I'm wondering if there's something amiss with my registry. I tried running a registry cleaner (which always scares me!) but it's still doing the same thing. It's more of an annoyance than an issue but if anybody happens to know what might cause this, I'd like to figure it out. I haven't had a chance to try it on any other computers yet.

Cal, I just ran your test on my win7 machine in ver 10.5 and got the following:

        Code:
        ?registry.sys_get("HKEY_local_machine\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProductName")
        = "Windows 7 Enterprise"

          Cal,
Maybe it's an upgrade issue? Is your machine an Upgrade from XP to Windows 7, or a fresh, new install of Win 7.

            Code:
            ---Test 1---
            ?registry.sys_get("HKEY_local_machine\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProductName")
            = "Windows 7 Professional"

            ---Test 2---
            ?registry.sys_get("HKEY_local_machine\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProductName")
            = "Microsoft Windows XP"
Its the compatibility mode causing this. Right click the alpha.exe file, select properties, compatibility tab.

              Re: XP vs. Win7 puzzle

Thanks Tom. Sounds more and more like there's something very strange going on with my computer.

Mike, it was a new install quite awhile ago.

And, assuming there is something strange going on, it might not matter at all much longer. Apparently my mother board is going bad so it may be time for a replacement. The local hardware guru says he can see that a couple capacitors have overheated and he thinks that might have something to do with the fact that it takes multiple tries to start it and then it occasionally (once every couple days) just shuts down like someone pulled the plug. The CPU fan often pulses about every 15 seconds as well. Time to make a list of all the programs I have and make copies of all the install files, etc. The data isn't a problem because it's all on an external RAID box.

                Thanks Andrew! Mystery solved!

And now I'll feel better about just replacing my motherboard instead of getting a new computer. (Yes, it's 4 years old and probably time for a new one but I really hate the idea of having to reload Windows and all those programs, drivers, etc. so I'll just replace the board since it's still available.)
