Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    you may need to post the whole script by a copy and paste for everyone to see what the problem is?

      Re: topparent.find() error

      No script, it happens when I click "Find by key" on the forms standard toolbox.
      The "A5_select_key_value" script is called by A5.

        Re: topparent.find() error

        Nick, the combination needs to be Char. Look at DTOC(date), so the key will be something like alltrim("data"+dtoc(date))

          Thanks Ted, But the form in V11 itself makes the order expretion like ( "data"+Cdate(date)).

            Re: topparent.find() error

            Nick, I'm unable to duplicate the problem here. When I do what you describe Alpha behaves without error.

            Check this screencast: http://screencast.com/t/nvorgN3Vq

            In my example both fields used in the ordering expression are found in the parent table of the set supporting the form. Are you mixing fields from two different tables?

              Thanks Tom, The expresstion is a combination of two different tables in the set.
              But if remove the date field ,the find key works even though ,the remaining fields
              are from different tables.The date field is from a child table .If it's the only key field
              is works .

                Re: topparent.find() error

                That explains it. To use the toolbar find by key I think the key is limited to parent table fields.

                  Re: topparent.find() error

                  Had a fiddle with this Nick.
                  The easiest way would be to create a field in either table and Post the required data to it.
                  It's data duplication, but then you could have a Calculated Field which would combine the char and date into a searchable field.
                  In Field Rules, If you enter the calculation expression across a Set using data from two sets, the calc shows the correct result but I cannot get it to save. Says No Such Field - even though its worked on the screen!

                    Thanks Ted ,
                    I think I will use your suggestion with the dup field.

                      Thanks Tom ,But in a set with 1 to 1 links the "Find by key" should work and it does unless there is a date field in the key .

                        Re: topparent.find() error

                        Nick, you didn't say it was a one to one set until post #11. Or did I miss something? My post (#8) assumed, mistakenly, that you had a one to many set.

                        Even with a one to one set I'd be wary of using built in "find by key" routines that expect the field to be present in the top (parent) table of the set, using search keys in other tables. I'm not surprised you're having an issue.
