Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Activation problem

If your old drive is totally gone and you can't retrieve the activation file from it, you're probably stuck with getting a new one from Alpha. I'd give them a call if they don't reply to your e-mail soon.

FWIW, if you have it, the runtime doesn't require any activation. Of course, that means you can't make any changes to your program but at least you could use it until you get an activation key for the full version.

      Re: Activation problem

Out of curiosity, where would I find my activation keys/files so I can back them up?

      Never mind. I found them:

      C:\Users\"YOUR USER NAME"\App Data\Roaming\Alpha Software\

Cal, they can and will reset the V5 - just email [email protected], and copy Richard. As recently as about a year ago, I had to get one reset for my hospital chain. (Although they have since moved to V10, after 8 years with V5.)

For the less computer literate, here's some more detail that I send to someone via e-mail recently....

To find your activation key, there's a file called -- wait for it... wait for it... Activation.key

In A5v5 through A5v7 it's located in the A5 executable folder (where Alpha5.exe is).

In A5v8 and higher it's under the Windows "Application Data" folder....

          - In Win7, the "application data" folder for A5v11 is: C:\Users\<YourUserName>\AppData\Roaming\Alpha Software\Alpha Five Version 11.

          - In XP I think it was: C:\Documents and Settings\<YourUserName>\Application Data\Alpha Software....

HOWEVER, the Application Data/AppData folder is a hidden folder so your system must be set to show hidden files and folders in order to find it. Assuming you are using Win7, open the Windows control panel and select "Folder Options" then go to the "View" tab and look for "Show hidden files, folders, and drives". (Careful, in Win7 there is also an "Application Data" folder but it's not accessible and it's not the one you want.)

In XP you have to open Windows Explorer and click "Tools / Folder Options" in order to set the "Show hidden" property.

            Re: Activation problem

When using version 7 there are 4 ways offered to get an activation key: online, fax, snail mail, and phone. I find it curious they don't offer an email option, but being a shit head that was my first method of request: I emailed with my license number. I have yet to even have that email acknowledged.

Next I tried the phone, and sat on hold listening to a looped message suggesting I leave a message. After about 15 minutes I did that yesterday morning. I have yet to hear back from anyone.

I have some 43 days left to do this, so I tried the snail mail option - the program takes your name and address and I assume will grab your license number from wherever it stores it - but it was written for an ancient form of windows and the windows api no longer seemed able to make the notepad work.

I only have one phone line and it is a pain to get the fax going and it would mess up my incoming calls. Besides, if the print won't work I am pretty sure the fax would fail also - it would do the same thing but fax instead of print.

Soooo. I am at the mercy of the paid help at Alpha. The free help here has always been off the charts. I will try sending fresh emails and phone support messages on Monday.
