Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Using Bar Code & UPC's

    Greetings,

Has anyone successfully integrated Bar Code or UPCs into an application (desktop) and can you recommend any inexpensive scanners that worked (integrated easily) AND well (reliably) for you.

I need to "step into the waters"....

    Thanx,
    Keith

I created a barcode scanning system to manage a maintenance and inventory program. Once you understand the onkey event, it becomes relatively easy to build it in. In relation to scanners, you can get very cheap crap on ebay, but I used a bluetooth scanner made CINO with cradle that was excellent. It allowed to use in batch mode which imported every easily and also had a good range from the program when using direct input.

While you can use the onkey on a form, you can also create xdialogs as well.

Hmmm, must of missed that... tried searching and did not get anything I was looking for either.
Not interested in printing... only inputting.

Keith, you're not alone. Most don't realize that the message board has a "similar threads" functionality. This is another reason its important to choose the subject line for a new post carefully. The subject line is used by the board in locating "similar threads".

Click here l If you go to this link it should take you to an example of using the onkey event. While it is based on typing, it will also work if you were using a scanner

My inventory application uses Symbol (Motorola) P470 wireless scanners. You can get them used on ebay. They behave just like USB keyboards. As posted, you just use the on key event to process the information sent by the scanner.

Re: Using Bar Code & UPC's

I've been using the Symbol USB non-wireless desktop scanner for several years V8 forward. Works well, about 159 each
We use it to track orders as they progress thru the shop, to manage inventory, and packing slips.

they are limited to standard barcodes. For the other "square - QR Code" type of barcode, you will have to spend a lot more to get one that scans reliably - I have one client that uses them - about 450.00 each.

Whether a wireless scanner will work reliable depends a lot on the environment. We spent 1,200 for one, but because there is a lot of metal in the shop, we could never get it to work reliably. The manufacturer really tried to get it to collect and then dump, but would never work reliably. So we just print a list of inventory items on paper with the description, location, and barcode. They manually check the ones they moved, and we then scan with the Symbol from the paper. Is fast and simple, and works every time.

Thanx, for the make/model info, I will begin investigating which unit I want to start with... I do not really care for the initial testing whether it is wireless or not. What I was wondering is if there were some units to stay away from as they do not work well with A5 for one reason or another. I would suspect, as many scanners are treated like keyboard input, they should all work in theory, but as we know theory and practice do not always equate.
