Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Form handling question

In my application I have some forms I want opened using frmName.maximized() I have others that I want to open more like a dialog that is not maximized, However when I open one of these smaller forms the ones that maximized change to standard window form. On the left is the way I want to keep that form even though the Quick Search is opened. However, when I open the quick search I get the normal window look. I have tried dfferent events and different property settings without success. I will assume this is a simple solution but I am confounded right now...

    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Re: Form handling question

I am a bit old fashioned, and run "full screen" apps
where I want to use a smaller window for a nother form, I open as dialog
There are many advantages to this approach - like if you have a long script, and you open a 2nd form as a dialog to get their answers to certain questions that will affect the rest of the script, the script will stop unitl they close the smaller window.

    example:
I am on one form, maximixed, and the user presses a button that opens the 2nd form:

    the button onpush event:
    dim global answer as c
    f=form.view("the other form name","dialog")
    f.close()
    if answer="Print It - Option 1"
    'do something
    elseif answer="Print It - Option 2"
    'do something else
    else
    end 'do nothing
    end if

the second form, in properties, has no menus, is set to open in default position, and use form size for size

however, if you are using a muti-windowed app, note that until they close the 2nd form, all other windows are disabled - which is the way I want it.

      Re: Form handling question

Martin - thanks for the suggestion it may be the answer. I was hoping for a bit more granular control over the windows themselves through the properties. I thought I could control this in the properties by opening as modal and setting type as dialog, However, none of those settings gave me the desired outcome

I will give the code a try. I am wondering what impact this may have on my layouts, I may have to redo them.

      Thanks again

          Martin

I appreciate the help. I seem doing something wrong. I use the form_view("formName","dialog") method it raises an error. It coild be I am placing it in a form onInit event and not the button OnPush event. Can I give you a call in the morning?

Ray -You are right about the name, it was form.view() I was trying. I did the cut and paste process from the help and filled in the parameters but it did not work.

I am learning Xbasic, so periodically I think I know something when I don't, so the result is a I regularly create a method or property that does not exist... that would be bad enough but when I display my non-existing method to the whole world for consideration...well...

I am a bit surprised that there is not a bit more granular control over the windows in the properties. I never imagined the changing a a setting associated with a particular object such as form1 would impact form2 which has not been called and that the form2 settings would impact form1 when it was initiated and shown.

I guess its the leg bone is connected to the knee bone... type of thing.

              Thanks for the responses.

                Re: Form handling question

I just spent time with Martin Cole. I posted the images above consider those to before Martin. After he shared a bit the magic he uses the new image below is after Martin. He was able to guide through the desired outcome and share a lot of other useful knowledge.

I just wanted to publicly thank him for his kindness and time. There are so many who have helped me with learning A5. Its very cool and very much appreciated.
