Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Time Clock app alert for negative time entries?

I've got a time clock application that uses a browse within a form to keep track of employee time. The employee enters their name, time in and time out, and a calculated field gets their total time worked. However, sometimes an employee enters their time out as occurring before their time in (say, they type am instead of pm) and their total time becomes a negative number. This of course affects their total time worked adversely.

What is the best method to have an alert (error message, popup) whenever the total time is a negative number? Would this be done in field rules, because it doesn't look like you can do a validation with a calculated field.

    Still rather new to Alpha.

    Many thanks.

Can't you automate the am and pm based on the current time. Every time clock I have used, the user enters nothing except their id number and/or name usually accompanied by a password. The time clock knows what time it is and if they are already logged in as being there when they go to clock out. The time clock fills in the date and time in and the date and time out. The only user intervention is by a manager to correct when someone forgets to log in and/or log out or makes a mess of it.

That wouldn't work because we don't always clock in and out the moment we arrive at work. We're a small non-profit medical organization so we're trusting of our employees.

it doesn't look like you can do a validation with a calculated field
But you can do a validation on the same expression that fills the calculated field like

        somedate > date()
        amount + tax > 100
        There can be only one.

You can do a validation with a calculated field - just not to prevent initial acceptance.
So use an accompanying condition on the form to alert or reverse, immediately after.

Stan, Ray, could you elaborate? Still fairly new to Alpha.

As Stan said, where/how do you do the calculation that comes out negative?
Where you find that the calculation IS negative, THEN you need to make it known.

Be specific with that and what you want to happen and I will try fit a reply within that framework.

If that is not happening on the browse then you will need to put a check on the CanRowChange and probably CanDepart
or maybe you should create a field rule

That is about as specific as one can get with no information or sample to work with.

employee enters their name, time in and time out
For a given record the time out shouldn't be prior to the time in? If you create a validation rule for that does the problem go away?
                There can be only one.

It's a pretty basic set up - Literally a matter of entering a tabbing as though you were in Excel. Name, Time in, Time out. We calculate the total time by (TIME_FINISH-TIME_START) /60 /60

i guess i really just need an alert to pop up when total time becomes a negative number.
Can't do a validation rule on Total Time because it is calculated.

But you can do a validation on the time finish.

                      I'll try your method, Al.

For now I've created a dialog box script for CanRowChange and CanDepart. It's a little clunky because that box is popping up a lot... since I'm not 100% savvy with events I don't know for sure which one isn't necessary.
