Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Embedded browse - child filter on repeatring children

I have a form with an embedded parent (items) browse and child (purchase orders) browse. The embedded child browse is based on a one to one relationship. Many items can be on one purchase order. The child browse shows an entry for every parent and the entry can repeat itself numerous times, depending on how many parents there are to a child (has been many divorces in the family). Is there some way to filter the repeating child entry so that it appears only once.

Any help or thoughts will be appreciated.

If there is one child for any parent then dont use a browse for the child. Just fields on the form.
I dont fully understand the question in the manner that you explain, doesn't gel, but try that otherwise send a sample,

Larry, I share Ray's confusion about your post.

Typically, the purchase orders table would be parent, with the items table a one to many child. (Since any PO could have multiple items)

In your setup presumably the PO number is the link field, right? If not, please clarify. There should be no repeating entries in the child browse when the items table is sorted by item number. However, if you sort the items table by PO you should see the same PO repeated once for each item. As Ray says, if you want to avoid this just drop the PO fields on the form, and stop using the PO Browse.

Re: Embedded browse - child filter on repeating children

I designed my set as per attached as it seemed like everything revolved around the items (shop drawing) Since my post of last night, I have been able to expand my Item (shop drawing) browse to include the PO number and I will delete the PO browse as the info I need is now on the form. The two tables are linked on PO and sorted on the item tag. In the form example attached, I increased the size of the PO browse window to illustrate the repeating PO numbers. I was hoping to be able to reduce this to the number of entries to just the different PO's; in this example, there are three.

        Thanks

          I agree with Tom's statement.

Take a look at the AlphaSports sample. The invoicing portion has the invoice header (think purchase order) as the parent.
          There can be only one.

See the conflict? set one to one - but there are three PO's

Apparently you want to see for only one item as the parent, the PO (or all POs )
Your provided set diagram is oversimplified, some other one to many link could cause the apparent duplication.

            Suggestion;
Make a simplified testbed that works and build on that - that would either solve the problem or allow to present a focussed view of the problem..

Re: Embedded browse - child filter on repeating children

Ray, I don't think there is a conflict with what is happening in the display for the PO browse. A child is displayed for every parent. I have attached a simple set illustrating the repeating children

I was just hoping to filter out the child when it was common to several parents so that the PO browse list would be concise.

When creating a report, the blank_duplicate feature gets rid of a repeating field so I was looking for something similar that would filter out the repeating child records.

I am a bit reluctant to change the set structure to PO as the parent as suggested by Tom and Stan as this has been the way I have done it for quite some time.

Can anyone advise on the downside of the one to one relationships that I have set up?

                Hi, Larry.

                You said:

Not possible in your set based form. Forms are not reports. Reports are static. User cannot edit the data displayed in the report. Forms are live. To see this change the classpo for ponu a to "blue" using your form. The field value in all three rows of PONU "a" change automatically. Why does this happen? Easy. There's only one PO record. The fact that the display includes 3 rows, is confusing you. There are not three separate PO records that have a PONU of "a". Only one. You can't filter "the other" records because there's only one. Hope this explanation helps.

Re: Embedded browse - child filter on repeating children

When you create a set that is one to one the database creates a composite record that combines table A and table B into a single record. When you place a browse on a form in Alpha 5 it displays all of the records in the set there isn't a child record in this case. You can achieve the look & feel that you want by making a new set that is one to many & make the browse read only. I have added such a set to your sample & added a couple of field rules. It doesn't matter if there is only a single child. Also I would never use a space in the name of a table, form, report, or any object it will work most of the time but it will bite you. If you must space your objects use the underline character _ .
