Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Problem with browse form

I am having issues with a browse in A5 v11 that does not occur in V10. I have created a simple browse that shows several fields so I can scroll down and edit fields based on certain searches. If I open the browse with no search criteria evrtything works fine, I can click the field make change and using mouse just point to same field 10 records down and change but when the script to filter the records to certain ones the browse is erratic, I click on a field and change the cxlick the mouse 10 records down and it may jump 20 records down. This does not happen in Version 10

    Hi Greg,

I see that you added your problem to another thread before starting this one, when in fact Ted gave you the answer in that thread with, "Do not change data in the Browse". I would add to that, in particular when it is a filtered view. As you have proved, "If I open the browse with no search criteria everything works fine".

Referring to V10 might seem logical but there are many things in V11 that you can't do in V10, so I would suggest you regard V11 as a completly new and different program.

      Hi Keith
I have no info on any desktop functionality added to v10 - when you say "many things in v11 that you cant do in v10" do you know what some might be?

        Greg,
Is it possible for you to post an example of your problem. I for one do not believe this can be acceptable, v10 or v11. The thing that I caution about is when you have a filtered table that a browse is viewing, if you change the value of a field that the filter is addressing, the base filter will act upon that record, and the filter and order might very well result in a change in the view based upon the record field value change relative to the filter, and therefore giving you the behavior that you are describing.

I do have a browse with field that have a filtered table but the fields that I change have nothing to do with the filter. I have a script that that searches for records with say field monday and route one. In the browse field I want to change a character field and then just arrow down or click the mouse on the character field ten records down and it will jump to another record that I did not click on.

Greg, what you describe sounds very wrong. For us to help you here you will need to upload a zip file copy of your database. If posting that in public is an issue, or if you don't know how to create the zip file post a reply here and tell us how we can reach you privately.

Go to the Alpha Five Control Panel; choose Tools off the top menu; Choose Zip Workspace; Select all the files (this is the default); Note the path and filename that will be used; click "zip files" button.

Then attach the resulting zip file to a reply post here. do this by beginning the reply, then click the go advanced button; scroll down a bit to "manage attachments"; upload your zip file as an attachment, then finally, "submit" your reply.

In your reply message body please tell us which form is giving you trouble and give us step by step instructiions to follow in order to see the behavior you're describing.

In searching for some other stuff I ran into this... and wondered if this might be a solution for you.

In your Form Properties, Filter/Order, click on your child table... the table your browse is based on. There's an option here labelled Lock Order when Editing. Have a look at the included explanation.

Hello open form: Route sheet, then browse garbage route, pickup day Tue, then route 1. I want to change the map number field by clicking on one to change. after change if you click on another line same field it will got to different line you click. This does not happen in version 10. In ver 10 I could rapidly click lines to change, but ver 11, it chooses where to go.

This particular form is not in a set just a single table browse so there is no option labelled lock order unless you do have a set??

                            Re: Problem with browse form

Greg, I took a look, using build 3044 of A5v11. Use "Help", then "About Alpha Five" to see what build you're using.

On my system when I change a mapnum field value and down arrow, the browse scrolls to position the record just edited at top line. Focus does not "jump around", the row I down arrowed to (so to speak) is still in focus, but the browse has been scrolled for us so that its now the second row from the top. I can rapidly click and change successive lines no problem. The automatic scrolling of the display is, I think, a new feature.

By the way your Route Sheets form is based on live data. Since it's a menu form, and no data entry will occur through that form, most would based the form on a dummy table. There's no good reason to open up another instance of your madison table, which is what happens each time you open the Route Sheets form.

Hi Tom, Can the auto scrolling be stopped and what about if you did not click on field in succession, why does it jump to another record, and finally, do not understand dummy table, I will have to read about it since I am a novice.
