Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Alpha 5 V11 Charting - Is it really this bad

I have been writing access apps for quite some time and love the ease of reporting and creating charts. Its simple.
I have been using Alpha 5 to create a manufacturing supplier app. Records supplier info including on time delivery, quality information etc.

All I want to do is create a couple charts viewing this data on a monthly basis, and then be able to view the data summarized on the charts so Ican get a supplier rating 12 month running.
Its a piece of cake in access / excel.... But the documentation for the charting feature in alpha 5 desktop really does suck....
I want charts on forms and reports.... I have watched pretty much every video I can find but they are basic - or im stupid.
Its easier for me just to dump it all in access and move back to that software.

Does anyone have any place to go get some actual instructional information on setting up charts?

    Hi Michael,

No, you aren't alone, the documentation isn't very helpful in my opinion and no you're not stupid. Other then here, I honestly don't know where there is help.

If you view any of my chart questions posted in the last 45 days or so, you will see my struggle.

I am no expert on A5, but like you I find creating charts and reports much easier in other tools.

What I'm finding is that the majority of my other chart creation skills don't transfer over to A5.

Pick the most basic chart that you want to create, like pick the chart type and data source. Select a few options on the chart dialog box, then preview the chart. For some options that I had/have no clue what they do or where they will appear on the report, I type the name of the option, preview the report and see where it shows up. Yep, very time consuming, but between doing wacky things like that and posting questions here about what a specific option means and does, I was able to create some of the charts that I wanted to.

If you post a message saying the type of chart you are trying to create and where the process is breaking down, more people will be able to try to help you. Hey who knows, I may be one of them, although it would be a good idea to get a second opinion on my responses as there may be a better way that I am not aware of.

    Good luck
    Tracy
