Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Filtering a browse on a form using a dropdown

Maybe it is late and I am not thinking straight, but I am in need of filtering a named browse layout that I have on a form and I am drawing a blank.

I have a set that consists of two tables. "mileage_tracking" and "vehicles". mileage_tracking is the primary table and vehicles is the child. mileage_tracking contains a bunch of records for multiple vehicles. In that table there is a Vehicle_id field. The vehicle table also contains the vehicle_id field as well as other details about each vehicle that is not in the mileage_tracking table. I have created a browse that will show me the entries sorted by each vehicle_id and then by date. I have created a form that has a browse object that uses the named browse that I created. I would like to add a couple of dropdowns on the form to filter the named browse that is on the form. The first drop would contain a single entry for each vehicle_id that is in the table, so if there are 50 records for vehicle 1 and 25 for vehicle 2 the drop down would only contain two entries (vehicle 1 and vehicle 2). When I click the dropdown I want it to filter the browse and only show the records for the chosen vehicle_id. I would also like to add a second dropdown to filter the Payer field. Same scenario as the vehicle_id drop down, multiple records that contain the same payer but only want to see one entry in the dropdown.

Any assistance or guidance would be greately appreciated.

    Hi Keith,

It sounds to me that you have got your set the wrong way round. The vehicle has the static data, while the mileage_tracking table gets updated.

On a form you can have a browse of all the Vehicles and a second browse with each vehicle's mileage.

That would work if I just want to filter the mileage_tracking records by the vehicle_id, but I also want to filter it where I can select a specific payer, so for example I want to filter it to show me vehicle 1 and payer 3. the payer field is only in the mileage_tracking table.

Drop an example here Keith. It's all doable but a sample makes it easier to respond. Saves having to rebuild what you already have and we sometimes don't have time to do that.

I have attached a sample version of my workspace. There are two tables, one has two vehicles in it and the other has all the mileage records for those two vehicles. The fom vehicle_details in set vehicle_no_mileage_reimbursement is the form that I created that contains a browse. When that form is opened you see the browse filtered by the record that is selected in the primary table of the set (vehicles). I have a dropdown supercontrol on that form that can select which vehicle I want to see and the browse updates correctly. What I would like to add is the ability to further filter the browse by the Payer field in the mileage_tracking table. The sample has records in the tables and you will see that the vehicle "2009 Chevy 1500" only contains one payer, but the vehicle "2009 Chevy 3500HD" has two payers. After selecting the 2009 Chevy 3500HD I would like to then have a dropdown that filters the browse to only show a single payer.

Let me know if that helps.

            Try the attached Keith.
It's a bit rough and ready but has a dynamic tree as well as the vehicle selector.
If you want to examine how a dynamic tree is constructed, you will be able to put the vehicle AND the payer in and parse the result. I don't have time at the moment to do that but you should be able to make some headway now.
