Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: The Complete Run-Your-App-On-Web-Components Thread !

I do some "off the shelf" software and have avoided anything other than the basics. No web components here as yet. When a user downloads a FREE app( I do have one), they are not inclined to pay me or even the transportation to come to wherever they are to custom install it. I got astrum to help with this. It has done all I needed so far. I think someone on here said it is now free to use. Some of the others I found are way too expensive or don't do what I need them to. I may have missed one though.

I am not sure why one would not be able to build all the stuff into an install that would be needed for web components using an installer?? Seems alpha runtime/developer/was can install with everything using wise installer.

      Dave

I have read more than a few of your posts concerning Astrum and how well it works for you. I don't want to hijack this thread and make it about installers but when it comes to web components on the desktop, the installers fail. I cannot say why. The issue seemed to be that the app would no longer be able to find the web component. You had to use the web control panel to point it to the component and then all was fine. However, RunTime did not allow you to this you needed the developer version. As I said the all the installer installed the component, the directory, etc. The application however did not see it once installed.

Thinking I was having a problem of my own creation, a couple other forum members donated some time to try and create the install. It similarly failed for them as well. Point being it was not just me. It was for that reason I stepped back from using web components in my app. If I could not effectively deploy them I could not use them. This was too bad because like Marcel I saw the ability to use web components in a desktop app as a really great feature.

        John,

The intent was not to hijack this thread. If alpha would make their installer or at least make the information available as to how to make it work, it would really help and I might like it too. If it takes an outside installer and the knowledge is available how to set it up, all is good, else I am not interested yet! If it is a case of the proper files being in different places on different win versions, it can be handled with an installer.

I am afraid it would take a bit of work to chase it all down along with testing on different systems to be sure we have it right. I would be willing to help and would like the advantages in the future.

I happen to need to write a log file to the webroot of my WCD application, if one exists. I know it must render the HTML somewhere, but where? The protocol is "a5res://", but where is that?
