Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Simple Grouping on Sub-Report not working. (Am I doing something wrong?)

This is weird because this is so simple, and yet I can't get it to work.

I have a set that consists of a table called "PersonnelResp," "Member_Info," and "Fire_Stations." The parent table contains all the important data, and the second two are used only to identify the name and fire department of user this report is focused on.

I have sub-report that lists Elected Positions held throughout the year, and I want to group them by the position itself.

I have a field called "Position," and I have set it to group by that field.

Yet for some strange reason, they always display in the order of Date, then Position.

As an example, this sample record has a total of two positions for this person. He held one position for 3 months and the other for 2 months as well. This is how I would like them to display:

    01/20/2013 CHIEF
    02/20/2013 CHIEF
    03/20/2013 CHIEF

    01/20/2013 SECRETARY
    02/20/2013 SECRETARY

But as you can see from the attached screen shot, they are displaying by date and then position, despite the fact that I have the set to Group by Position.

    Confused.

As usual, would be much easier to diagnose a sample than simply guess.

Yeah I guess that would help, wouldn't it?

Okay I have attached the necessary files with sample data so you can see what I am talking about.

There is only one report in this set, and it is filtered to one specific person. When you open it, look at Page 2,
and you will see the sub-report.

      Thanks,

Right click on the Detail Header and choose Properties. Change the Order expression to Position.

Double left click on the Elected Positions sub-report. Use the Report menu, Select Records, and set the order to Position.
        There can be only one.

Thank you Stan, that works like a champ.

I guess what threw me is that I am not using a detail section in the overall report per se, so I did not think to change any of the settings in that section.

Glad we worked it out. Probably has to do with the sub-report being (properly) within the detail section.

Note to others: It took 19 minutes to get a solution after a sample was attached. Without a sample, who knows how many suggestions it might have taken?
