Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Much Needed SEARCH Feature

A grid has 3 components, Grid, Search and Detail. The search part of a grid is awesome. It's simple to create, has multiple search parameters and works flawlessly. There is nothing like it for the desktop, and, there ought to be. It seems a bit redundant to use a button to call up a search dialog. It's like when the Action Scripting dialog is first opened. You must click the "Add New Action" in order to view the action scripts. (Yes, I know so the user can opt in for the IF CONDITION but that is the exception rather than the rule) It's a waste of time and an extra step that is not needed. So it is with using a button to call up a search dialog. Why can't we simply place a field on a form, open the field's properties, open the Control Type and select "Search Field". If that were there, the Search Field properties would open and the search parameters could be built just like it is in the Grid's Search Part.

WALLA, SIMPLE, EASY TO DO, NO CODE TO WRITE. OH MY, WHAT A MAJOR ENHANCEMENT!!

This would be a HUGE enhancement, would it not?

P.S. The attaching a file still does not work.

        Kenn,

Put a form into design mode, from the toolbox, select Supercontrols and select Drop Down Browse. I think you will find it pretty close to what you are looking for.

          Re: Much Needed SEARCH Feature

I'm not sure how it's supposed to work but this is what I found. Setting it up is a first class pain. After drawing the layout on the screen, when the window appears, it is populated with the frist field in the table and getting rid of it is not as easy as it should be. IOW, simply removing the field with the remove arrow, removes the field but not the field properties in the box above. Adding fields does not change the properties box, it remains the same as the properties for the field I just removed. And, changing the field name in the properties box is another bewildering course of events.

When a selection is made, The error message Record Number is past end of table appears. Clicking the Design View icon also produces the same error message.

When the form is opened, it shows a last name which is the first field in the drop down browse. A new name can be typed and it does fill in. However, the drop down does not auto pop up. The down arrow must be clicked. The list of names and other fields appear but the name I type may not be in the list. IOW, it's not at the top of the list nor are the names in alphabetical order. I did uncheck the Unique checkbox.

The Grid Search feature is very easy to setup and use. It behaves very well, showing the list of names, filtering out as the letters are typed. It is more practrical in that if you don't remember the name, taqking a guess at the letters will lead one to the correct name because it will be in the list, assuming of course, the right letters are typed.

In the end, I'd say the super control drop down browse is full of bugs and is not practical to use.

I do not recall having the issues that you are describing when creating a drop down browse. That said, I haven't created a new drop down browse in quite a while. However; I have been using them for quite a while.

In the past, I have reported issues with the drop down browse as bug reports and those issues were addressed. I would suggest that you submit a bug report detailing your concerns.

In the mean time, I did vote yes in your poll.

              Hi Ron,

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm afraid that if Alpha looks at the number of Yes votes compared to the number of Views, they will not want to invest any time in it. But, who knows????
