Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Array Delete Error For Numeric Arrays

    The delete function for a numeric array appends the values to the end of the file after deleting them.

    dim arr_c[5] as c
    dim arr_n[5] as n

    arr_n[1] = 10
    arr_n[2] = 20
    arr_n[3] = 30
    arr_n[4] = 40
    arr_n[5] = 50
    ui_msg_box(" Numeric : Before", str(arr_n[1]) + " " + str(arr_n[2]) + " " + str(arr_n[3]) + " " + str(arr_n[4]) + " " + str(arr_n[5]))
    arr_n.delete(2,2)
    ui_msg_box("Numeric : After", str(arr_n[1]) + " " + str(arr_n[2]) + " " + str(arr_n[3]) + " " + str(arr_n[4]) + " " + str(arr_n[5]))

    arr_c[1] = "10"
    arr_c[2] = "20"
    arr_c[3] = "30"
    arr_c[4] = "40"
    arr_c[5] = "50"
    ui_msg_box("Character : Before", arr_c[1] + " " + arr_c[2] + " " + arr_c[3] + " " + arr_c[4] + " " + arr_c[5])
    arr_c.delete(2,2)
    ui_msg_box("Character : After", arr_c[1] + " " + arr_c[2] + " " + arr_c[3] + " " + arr_c[4] + " " + arr_c[5])

    I've confirmed your findings and suggest you submit a formal bug report, with the sample you've just posted. Use the Help menu choice in Alpha Five to do this. Let us know what response you get back.

    By the way, I'm curious what behavior you're expecting. The method you're using does not change the size of the array, so I'd expect zeros in elements 4 and 5.

      I'm new to A5. I'm trying to periodically reset the array and repopulate. This, I believe this will work with the character array, which is what i need. I just lucked onto the numeric error. Thanks.

          This is A5s response...

          yes, it is a bug, but the work around is simple:

          you should call the .set_dynamic() method before you delete items from the array

          dim aa[5] as N
          aa[1] = 1
          aa[2] = 2
          aa[3] = 3
          aa[4] = 4
          aa[5] = 5

          aa.set_dynamic(.t.)
          aa.delete(4,1)
          ?aa.dump()
          = 1
          2
          3
          5

            Thanks. Not a completely satisfactory response.

            Notice that the array is re-sized automatically now. This is inconsistent with how the character array is behaving.

            If your goal is re-size the array then the work around is a great solution. If your goal is to simple replace the deleted elements with zeros it is not.

              Re: Array Delete Error For Numeric Arrays

              I submitted this as a bug to Selwyn couple years ago and he advised me the same thing.
              Unfortunately, .set_dynamic() method is not available in my version of alpha. The way to get around this is to resize the array.
              So, as a matter of routine, whenever I delete, I resize.

                Tom:
                I just noticed your latest response.
                The object of array.delete is not to delete the value but to delete the element altogether, i.e. remove that element from the array.
                If, as you said, the goal is to replace the value (not the element) with zero, then you do not need array.delete in which case the proper syntax would be:
                aa[3]=0 'to replace the value of the element.
                So, I think Selwyn's response is satisfactory from my point of view and in this case you could either use this new method as a matter of routine whenever you dim an array or simply use my way if you are dealing with an older version of alpha.

                  G,

                  I agree, but I'm looking at the problem through the other end of your telescope.

                  If the elements in the array are CHARACTER data the size of the array does NOT change when the DELETE method is used.

                  Consider this:

                  Code:
                  [FONT=Courier New][SIZE=3]dim arr_c[5] as c
                  arr_c[1] = "10"
                  arr_c[2] = "20"
                  arr_c[3] = "30"
                  arr_c[4] = "40"
                  arr_c[5] = "50"
                  ui_msg_box("Character : Before", arr_c[1] + " " + arr_c[2] + " " + arr_c[3] + " " + arr_c[4] + " " + arr_c[5])
                  arr_c.delete(2,2)

                  ui_msg_box("Character : After", arr_c[1] + " " + arr_c[2] + " " + arr_c[3] + " " + arr_c[4] + " " + arr_c[5])

                  ?arr_c.size()
                  = 5[/SIZE][/FONT]

                    Re: Array Delete Error For Numeric Arrays

                    It does not change in any case, whether it's a charter, numeric or otherwise, UNLESS you use the new method (I have no way of testing this, but according to Selwyn it works) or you resize the array.

                    That was my contention to Selwyn, that deleting an element does not resize the array, hence the introduction by alpha in the newer versions of alpha of a method that dynamically resizes the array.

                        Actually, I think instead of adding this new method, alpha should have retooled the array.delete() to resize at the same time. Who knows, maybe it is not that simple.
