Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    V7 Shortcut won't work with V11 installed

Hi, a basic question: I have installed V11 trial version and now my v7 application shortcut won't work: it defaults to loading V11. How do I prevent this? I have seen something about this on the forum but cannot find it now.

like many others I have been happily running my application written in V7 for some years and have had to upgrade the computer to Win 7 and have run into the problem of the pdf driver not working. I am in the very early stages of looking at V11 but I see I cannot just open my existing .adb application file so I assume this means a lot of rebuilding, is this likely to be a complete rewrite such as when I moved from A4 to A5?

Thanks for any help, I am sure I will be back but at the moment I would just like to get my application opening normally again!

Edit the properties of your shortcut. Should look something like

    "C:\Program Files\a5V11\alpha5.exe" "C:\temp\New Database\Houch.adb" -INCLUDE="C:\temp\New Database\Houch_Houch New.startup"

    Change the 11 to 7.
    There can be only one.

Thanks for your reply but my desktop shortcut reads like this:
      TARGET: "C:\Program Files (x86)\A5V7\alpha5.exe"
START IN: [B]"C:\Program Files (x86)\A5V7\Samples\INSIDE PARK" [B] where INSIDE PARK is the .adb file
but when I click on it A5V11 opens NOT A5V7

If I change the START IN TO: START IN: [B]"C:\Program Files (x86)\A5V7\Samples\INSIDE PARK_INSIDE PARK New.startup" [B]
I get: "The folder................specified in the Start Box is not valid"

        Jeremy,

are your application files under program files(x86)? If so, they really need to be moved to a folder on the c: drive. This is a windows thing and not alpha. It gets even tougher with win8 about data in the wrong place.

Stan gave you the correct example for the link.

Thanks for your reply, I have tried that with worrying results. My experience so far is:

          1. Old computer running XP died, bought new one with Win7. Installed A5V7 and accepted default location of "program files (x86)" etc. for both A5v7 and data files. Application worked fine in all respects until I tried to create and email a pdf file
          2. Looked on Forum and saw much discussion about this, not much hope for the pdf, but one general suggestion being to install A5v7 on the C: drive as you have said above
          3. Uninstalled A5v7 and reinstalled it on the C: drive. Program crashed every time I tried to run it.
          4. After much panic, this being a working day, I uninstalled it and reinstalled it back to the default location (x86) whereby it continued to work ok as before - big sigh of relief!
          5. I decide that, after scouring the forum, general consensus is that I will have to upgrade to v11 to get the functionality I want under win7
          6. Download the trial version to see how much rewriting I will have to do, and this is where I am with the shortcut problem
          7. My current priority is to get the shortcut working so that my employees can start the application without me if required, this being a booking system running on one computer. I haven't even begun to look at A5v11 yet and see how to run my application with it - it won't start just by trying to load it so I guess the .adb file from version 7 is no longer a part of the new version. I was hoping to create a separate environment for version 11 and experiment with it , without it taking over my existing application!

A bit stuck at the moment and not sure which way to turn first!

From myComputer browse over to the directory where A5v7 is installed.

            Right click Alpha5.EXE.

            Troubleshoot compatibility. Choose XP.

            Start A5v7

From the File menu OPEN your database

Go to the Alpha five control panel

            Choose Tools menu

            Create new shortcut

Re: V7 Shortcut won't work with V11 installed

I think you misread what I wrote.

I said to put the application folder on the c:\drive. That is the folder with the adb init and all your dbf files.

v7 does work on win7, yes, you would be better off with v9 10 or 11. You can run v7 in compatibility mode as a stop gap.

V11 should have no problem opening your adb file( i do it all the time). There may be other things, but it should open it. It may work fine, mine did.

If you decide to get v11, there is an ala-carte way to purchase it off the main web site. Just have to look for it. You can also download a trial version that will work for 30 days to get you by.

                  .
Ah yes, I did misunderstand: I thought you meant to install the files and program on the c:/ drive. I will try that in the morning when I go to work and report back.

Thanks also Tom for your help

I also do not understand why alpha had a problem on c drive. I put it there all the time with version 7 and most other versions with windows OS not being a factor.
                    Good luck tomorrow..

Good news, that all works! I also moved a version of my data files to another folder on the c:\ and A5V11 will now open the application and it appears to run OK

"If you decide to get v11, there is an ala-carte way to purchase it off the main web site" I assume you mean the single-user option at $250, which is still a fair chunk of money, but hopefully they won't go down the subscription route for software at the basic level. Still a fantastic program.
MANY thanks to all for the help.

The bad news is that the broadband line is down for 3 days, I don't suppose anyone can fix that??????
