Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Software upgrade problems

I've long had Alpha products. Now I have A5V11. Tonight I checked to see if a new version was available. I downloaded the file and installed it. Now when I start A5V11, up pops a frame that says I have two choices. I can either run a batch file or reload A5v11.

Well....when I update, I don't save the files and so I no longer have anything that will allow me to reload. I'd be forced to go back to V10.

So, I tried the batch file. I have Win 7 and am an administrator on the machine. The batch file displays the instructions and says press a key. I press the key and a couple of lines flash and the run window closes. When I start A5 again, there's the message again.

Where do I go from here. I've read the batch file and it isn't executing properly. I'm in the A5V11 directory when I execute it. After pressing the key it seems like the two-three lines that are supposed to get me into the directory try to execute to no avail.

    I'm stuck.

    Thanks.

    Re: Software upgrade problems

If you have the original download, you can start fresh. Once in the start of alpha 5, you can go to the same web screen where you downloaded the updta. There is a way from there to download older updates.

If you don't have your original installer, go to your email and look for the email for that download.

If you have nothing, call alpha so they can help you figure it out.

I said this simply because it sounds like you been there before, but if you need more help, I (or others) will be here to help.

      Dave-

I've just just found the CD for the original V11. I'll just re-load that and then update the installation. I am curious how that just won't get me back to the point I was at this morning such that I need to run the problem *.bat file and...Groundhog Day. We shall see.

      Thanks for your response.

I have the newset update here that I ran a week or so ago and with no problems. Not sure what happened. Could have been a corrupt file??

          Thanks for the support.

Don't know what the problem was but it's behind us. A re-load did the trick.

The nice thing about well-behaved software is that it is .... well-behaved. I tried to remove V11 and the removal failed. A file was missing (maybe the source of the original problem?) so the removal from the Control panel didn't work. Well...what next? I just went into the directory and deleted the whole directory. When I reloaded, the license was already there and the history had been retained also. I was able to start right-off. Thanks to the Alpha developers for their attention to detail.
