Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Sheesh - v 11 Bootstrap Doc: Still Wrong!

    Well its nice that the Wiki got updated with the correct syntax, but in the 3 years since this error began you'd think they could have updated the pdf file they give you with the Runtime file.

    create_shadow2(shadow_db_name,master_db_name,.t.) is not correct

    Correction:

    create_shadow2(shadow_db_name,.t.)

    On the other hand the ability to add notes and favorites in the documentation viewer is nice - the script is correct there...

    BTW has anyone had any success with using the send feedback feature? Doesn't work for me.

    Robin,

    Have you submitted a formal bug report on this documentation error in the runtime PDF ?

      Hi Tom,
      No but I will. I can't seem to get the runtime to actually work at the moment on my machine that also has the full copy. Even when I use the alpha5.exe in the runtime directory, it is the developer version that loads. I tried renaming the file but that didn't work either. I will try a reinstall today and see if that makes a difference - and perhaps double check the license.key file I added...

        Robin, I have been using this for a while. It is the contents of the autoexec script in my bootstrap. I think it will do what you want. You may have to tweak paths just a little.

        Code:
        dim master_db_name as C
        dim shadow_db_name as C
        master_db_name = "\\path\ups55\sales.adb"
        shadow_db_name = "c:\ups55\sales.adb"

        ui_modeless_dlg_box("Install Ups55",<<%dlg%
        {can_exit=exit}
        {lf};
        Specify the path and filename of the master copy of the applicationlike: \\pc2\ups55\sales.adb ;
        [%P=ui_get_file("Select file","(*.adb)",master_db_name)%.100master_db_name];
        {lf};
        <Click Here to Start Install!oK?.not.(master_db_name="")> <Cancel!cancel>;
        %dlg%,<<%code%

        if a_dlg_button = "cancel" then
            ui_modeless_dlg_close("Install UPS55")
            a_dlg_button = ""
        end if

        if a_dlg_button = "oK" then
            if file.exists(master_db_name) = .f. then
                ui_msg_box("Error","Master Database not found.")
            else
                shadow_db_name = a5.Get_Name()
                a5.Load(master_db_name)
                a5_nopt_CopyAddFiles(shadow_db_name, master_db_name)
                create_shadow(shadow_db_name, master_db_name,.t.)
                ui_modeless_dlg_close("Install Ups55")
            end if
        end if
        %code%)
        Hope it helps. You are right, the help file had to be worked on a little.

          Dave,
          That makes more sense to me too - since in the help it left the variables blank. Now I have it saved here - thanks!

          I did have to reinstall the runtime as the first download was not the same as the 2nd.

              Dave,

              Do you know the differences between "Shadow DataBase" and "Bootstrap" in network?

              I have been used the "Shadow DataBase" on the network. I have a few problem with Filter - Report, Get the signatures on the reports, Dymo printer Settings - not able to see the Report_Review. I want to change to "BootStrap" networking.

              However, I am not able to proceed and have a few questions about this "BootStrap" from Help.

              1. Create a dummy application with no tables, forms etc. -- OK

              2. This dummy application will have a single Autoexec script shown below. -- OK

              3. Install the "Master" copy of the application in a shared folder on the server. -- Dose the mater mean for My Developer Application?

              4. Install the "Bootstrap" application on each runtime user's workstation. -- How to install?

              ---- I can not open this "BootStrap" from other computers with A5_RunEngine/Time.
              ---- Copy and pasted to Portable storage("J:\"), Open this "Boorstrap" file then the Shadow DB started with J:\myApp\application
              ---- If I changed to Shared the folder, then Client Computer is too slow and the path is \\server\bootstrap\myApp\Application\filename ... and no longer the "Bootstrap"
              It is overrid with application's Autoexec file.

              5. When the user starts the "Bootstrap" application. Once the user fills this in and clicks the OK button, the script will automatically open the master copy of the database.
              ---- where and what is my Shadow Database?

              *6. It will then do the initial Network Optimize, and then open the shadow copy of the application on the user's machine.
              ---- After completed the installation, Should the file path be like this layout => c:\client CPU name \ myApp\Application \ filename...... ?

                First, Maybe I missed it. What is the path you wish to use to your shadow copy and/or are you using shadow??

                just a thought: The adb file you create on the user machine that is the bootstrap has to be the same name as the one for your server adb file. That way it will overwrite the bootstrap and create no issues.

                For quite some time now and with most of my work, I create one shadow setup with any computer manually and then just copy it to the other stations.
                I have 40+ installs of shadow coming up where they will have the data on a server and 40+ users. They have given me the path to the server like \\servername\foldername\data\ and I will supply the app.adb name. I have the path duplicated here for testing since it is a very large app. When I sent the the install, it will have the data in one install for the server and one for the shadow that has the runtime folder(of my choice) and the shadow copy. It will also include the startup link for their desktop and will auto run the registration files as needed. When the click the desktop icon, the shadow will refresh and they are on their way.

                Some of my apps that I sell and have to be installed do still have the bootstrap, but again, I send the runtime as above with a shadow already created that gets overwritten by the bootstrap.

                  Good Morning Dave,

                  What is the path you wish to use to your shadow copy and/or are you using shadow?
                  -- may be; \\Server Name\Application Folder name\Application.adb

                  The adb file you create on the user machine that is the bootstrap has to be the same name as the one for your server adb file.
                  -- I understood it and I did.

                  That way it will overwrite the bootstrap and create no issues.
                  --- I have the problem and miss-understand at here.

                  This is what I did after create the BootStrap
                  * The "TeamApp " is A5 Application, "TeamBoots" is contained the Bootstrap code, TeamWork is just Backup from an attached ScreenShot.
                  Boot folder.jpg

                  1) - I made my BootStrap application(TeamBoots) into Shared file because I can read it from the other computers.
                  2) - I started the A5Runtime from the other computer (#1) - opened this TeamBoots file.
                  3) - created the start button - shortcut, from menu
                  4) - Closed it and open with the Start Button -- so far OK from computer 1.

                  I assumed the path should be -- " \\Server Name\TeamApp\Application.adb " from computer_1 but i have the table file path is " \\server name\TeamBoots\Application.adb " .

                  5) - Started the A5Runtime from Computer 2, -- I am not able to run the BootStrap application and It is my problem.
                  Because the BootStrap is overwritten by computer 1 installation.

                  Thank you

                    John,
                    The bootstrap would be placed on the user computer, not on the server.
                    example: I want my shadow created in user computer c:\shadow. I would place the bootstrap application there. When run, the bootstrap gets overwritten by the shadow. The shadow reads the files from the server and creates the shadow on the local machine.

                    Edit:
                    If you are not using shadowed apps, then no bootstrap is needed.

                      Dave,

                      The User Computer does not have the A5 Full version and A5 Runtime will not allow to create a Database. How do I create the "Bootstrap" from User computer?

                      Thank you

                        On the user computer your path to the bootstrap should look something like this:

                        C:\A5RT - the runtime exe files go here
                        |--\Shadow
                        |---\Teamapp
                        |----\Copy the Dummy files from bootstrap app here - this will only contain the adb,alb,alm,alx files also named the same as the app

                        On the server create a shared directory and name it Teamapp and put all the developer application files there.

                        Then on the local computer, have the runtime exe open the bootstrap adb in the shadow\Teamapp directory and it should do the optimization to replace the dummy app with the shadow tables you need.

                          Shadowed is meant to be on your user computers and (Usually) not on the server.

                          If you create a shadow on one computer, then you should be able to copy that folder to all the other user computers and they be happy.
                          all you need then is a start icon on the desktop that can be copied also from one computer to all the others.

                          Hint: when creating a shadow, you can modify the path to omit the shadow name
                          like c:\foldername\shadow\some.adb can be
                          like c:\foldername\some.adb

                          I just hate extra layers in paths.

                          I install my runtime in c:\alda12(12 being current versio) and all shadow folders below
                          c:\alda12\
                          -->racecar = racecar app shadow files
                          -->upslog = upslog app shadow files

                          when on server the actual data files go in:
                          c:\racecar
                          d:\upslog
                          or what is appropriate

                            Me too, but to avoid confusion when both sets of files may exist on the development machine - it helps to find the right files.

                              I just copy the whole dev folder to a copy on the c:\drive and operate on them from there and then copy them back(usually sans dbf and fpt file). Of course there is a backup for the errors I make, which is absolutely never LOL>
