Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I take then that you never accidently copied the shadowed files over your development copy...? Talk about crazy making!

Re: Sheesh - v 11 Bootstrap Doc: Still Wrong!

        Hi,

I am still working with this bootstrap.

Did you make this "Bootstrap" as a shared file?

I can not see the Bootstrap dialog any more after installed the Bootstrap from user_1 computer.

I can see the my application's.Adb file which is not the BootStrap when I tried to install it from user_2.

        The user_1 computer A5RT table's path is "\\teamApp\BootApp\application file names here "

I think the A5RT table's Path should be this " c:\User1 A5RT folder\teamApp\application file names here " so that the BootStrap still remain in the shared folder.

I am not sure that one of my code is related with Network setting or not.
I have the weekly reports with this filter
        Code:
        query.filter = between_date("assign_date",var->vMonDay,var->vSunDay)+" .and. act="+s_quote(.t.)
It was working fine until last week from other user's computers.
I tested this code from Developer computer( A5V9 full version and A5RT ) and window 7, the reports is shown as designed, However the other users( window xp) could not get same results.

I made new "Filter" and ran it, I have a same issue. The User Shadow did not get same result.

Re: Sheesh - v 11 Bootstrap Doc: Still Wrong!

          Hi Dave and Robin,

I still have the trouble with "Bootstrap" networking.
          *My Condition and result
          My application and Bootstrap path
          c:\TeamApp -- stored the application
c:\TeamApp\Startup -- stored the "Bootstra" application

and c:\TeamApp folder is set as Shared at Network.

I opened and ran the "Bootstrap" from RunTime (Client ) computer 2.
-- the Bootstrap Dialog is opened
          -- selected the master_db_name from Server path(form network path) " c:\TeamApp\TeamWork "
-- There are no other Selection option for "master_db_name" or setting the "Shadow" path

-- After ran, the Results are :
** I can see the "Shadow" files are stored at Server and path as \\TeamApp\Startup\(copy of teamwork )file_name ....
** I can create the "Start Button" from Control panel.
** I can not find any of the shadow path from Client's computer at all. -- Is it right way?
** The Bootstrap is gone after optimized this at from computer 2 so I am not able to find the "Bootstrap" any more from the other Computers. I am not able to create new Bootstap again because the "autoexec" is already existed.

          3. Install the "Master" copy of the application in a shared folder on the server.
-- Dose the mater mean for Bootstrap and my Application?

          4. Install the "Bootstrap" application on each runtime user's workstation.
-- How do I install this Bootstrap from Runtime - User computer?

Re: Sheesh - v 11 Bootstrap Doc: Still Wrong!

            John,
On your development machine the teamapp files should be in a sub directory of the Alpha exe directory:

            C:\A5v11\Teamapp\teamapp.adb

Server path where development app files are copied to a shared folder on the network

            \\server\Teamapp\teamapp.adb

The runtime exe files are put in a directory of its own

            C:\A5v11RT\

Create a sub directory here for the bootstrap app - which initially has the same name as your development app but no tables

            C:\A5v11RT\Teamapp\teamapp.adb

Open this dummy app with the runtime exe and follow the prompts to the server files and your dummy app will be populated with shadowed tables. Then you can copy this whole directory to the other user computers which you have set up with the same directory structure for their runtime.

Re: Sheesh - v 11 Bootstrap Doc: Still Wrong!

Give a scenario here? Maybe will help. You do not HAVE to have a bootstrap if you want to create the shadows on one or two computers. I use it due to installations all over the country and I can't be there.

1st: be sure you can see the server files(app) from the computer you are going to put the shadow on.
2nd Select a place where you want the shadow to reside on the user computer. That would normally be in a folder beneath the installed runtime where rt is installed in a folder on c:\drive (NOT in program files)
example: c:\alda\myshadow\ where rt is installed in c:\alda and I want the shadow in c:\alda\myshadow
              3rd put your bootstrap.adb in c:\alda\myshadow folder
              4th run the bootstrap
5th If the bootstrap.adb is the exact same name as the application.adb, then it will get overwritten.

Before doing any of this make real sure you have your paths right to the server and where you want the shadow to be. If you do that in the bootstrap autoexec, it should be simple.
Remember that you cannot assume that the computers are speaking. The server has to have a shared folder where the data files are and the user computer has to be able to see that folder.
              network_from_user.png

There are programs out there that can find files anywhere on a computer or a lan. I posted one about 2 years ago.

One other note: DO NOT place data files in any program files. That can lead to problems!

                Dave,
Did you notice he said his shadow files are on the server? He is not understanding something basic here about the directories and what files should be in them - at least that is my impression.

                  That,
he said his shadow files are on the server
                  is right.
                  I do not understand about
                  4. Install the "Bootstrap" application on each runtime user's workstation.

Is it just Copy the "Bootstrap" from server and paste to "client" computer with proper path and open the "bootstrap" with runtime program?

                      I got that Robin.
John, I think a miscommunication some where.
Is it just Copy the "Bootstrap" from server and paste to "client" computer with proper path and open the "bootstrap" with runtime program?
Yes. Into the folder you need it to be in on the users machine.
The runtime will serve no useful purpose on the server with what I think you want.

                      Help?
When I send a server type app, it comes in 2 parts: workstation and server. The server(the actual application) portion goes on whatever computer they call a server. The workstation/user machine copy is installed on each machine that will have a shadow on it.

                        John,
There is NO bootstrap placed on the server - only the copy of your original app from your developer machine. Which I hope you have a good backup copy of because I fear you may have copied shadowed tables to the server. Please open that app and see if your tables are shadowed in the control panel. If they are you need to delete them and copy the developer app again to the server.

Do you have the runtime program installed on the developer machine as well as the full program?
