Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Why do I need the v11 Runtime to run a shadowed app?

I'm sure the answer must be obvious - but wouldn't the shadowed app developed under v11 still run with the v10.5 runtime?

I think its important to use the same version and build in the runtime environment that were used in the development environment. You should not expect earlier versions to be able to run workspaces developed using later versions. You may even have trouble if you use earlier builds in the same version.

      Hi Tom,
I am just moving over to v11 from 10.5 and haven't really made any changes to the app yet. But that makes sense that if I do - I should use the same versions. It just doesn't seem to me as though v11 is much different than 10.5

Your 1st post and this last one are talking about different things, aren't they?

Anyway, this has been my experience: I can open a v10.5 developed master in v11, and using v11 to do it create a shadow, and then open the shadow in v10.5 with no problems (at least that I can detect so far). Obviously if one then creates a feature in the app that was not in v10.5, that presumably (in most cases!) would not work. Also, if in V11 you create a totally new app that does not use any V11 only features, I would expect that app to run in V10.5, though I have yet to test such a scenario.

Raymond you expressed my thoughts so much better! I am just curious what features there are in v11 that don't exist in 10.5 (apart from new functions)? Is the browse eg, somehow different? I suppose if I were using web components on the desktop that would surely be a factor, otherwise I'm not seeing what it might be.

For example: I love the new Control Library, but that is not a feature that would break my v10 app. And if my supercontrols are working ok in v10 then unless I add a new one from v11, they should be fine too.

I'm wondering if I shouldn't ask for a refund of the $200 for the runtime (before my 30 days are up) when I may well have what I need already with the v10 runtime.

Robin, like you I am so new to V11 that I am in no position to answer the questions you just raised. My main reason for going ahead with V11 (including the runtime) was that I hope it at least has more of a chance of being compatible with Window whatever coming down the road than v10.5 has--though I certainly don't know that, especially since v10.5 seems to run fine on Win 8 in XP or win 7 compatibility mode. Plus I don't doubt that I will incorporate some V11 stuff into my old apps, and I would need the V11 runtime for users to be able to run those updated apps. And I must say that were it not for statements from Alpha that from V12 on A5 will be available only by a high cost subscription (high cost in my book), I would have skipped V11 entirely.
