Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Multiple Column Charts (Chart Control)

    I have a form based on a single DBF table (Orderdetail.dbf)

    There are three columns in this table that I want to use to plot on a pie chart: SpecialPrice, DiscountPrice and Wholesale.
    I want to plot the totals of each of these fields.
    So...

    I placed a chart component on the form, specified that I want a pie chart,
    Source = Table
    Table = Orderdetail
    Arguments = not yet specified (for now I want all records totaled)
    Series Type = Multiple Column (I want to plot the sums of three different columns)
    Summation = total (I want the total of each column)
    Data Type = Numeric
    Data Columns = I defines three columns using field names

    NOW APPEARS THE PROBLEM...
    I cannot proceed because Alpha pops up a message: " 'Each' expression needs to be defined for summation. "

    What is this all about?? I don't want to 'group the data for unique summation values'... I can't figure out what this means?

    How can I plot the summation values for these three fields??

    I just followed your steps as best I could understand them and had no issues with the chart being generated. Post a sample that illustrates the issue.

      To get the chart control to summarize you must specify the Sample Unique value. It could be recno() or any other unique identifying value. I would guess that the summarization feature is meant to summarize child table values. If your orderdetail table has invoicenumber as a field, make that the Sample Unique.

        Hi Stan...
        I tried both recno() and Ordernum as the Sample Unique value... the chart shows as blank.

        I can send the table and form but since it contains proprietary information I would prefer to send it privately... but I don't know how to do this.

          David,

          Can you please zip a sample of the form with dummy data so that others can try because I am anxious to get a similar result with a pie chart.

          I can now create a pie chart but only when using values based on the same field values in different records (not multiple field values in a single record)

            Michael,

            His data is proprietary and he has emailed me a copy of the table in question. I believe I was able to solve the problem but am awaiting confirmation. My solution involves using a custom data source as the basis for the chart.

            Code:
            function plotArrayData as Charting::ChartDataDefinition(linkingFieldValue as n)
            'For more examples on how to generate a ChartDataDefinition object for different chart types
            'see examples in the Learning Xdialog Database
            '
            'Create an array with some data to plot
            dim a[3] as p
            a[1].name = "Special"
            a[1].value = tablesum("orderdetail",".T.","specialprice") 'grand total of specialprice field

            a[2].name = "Total"
            a[2].value = tablesum("orderdetail",".T.","totalprice") 'grand total of totalprice field

            a[3].name = "Wholesale"
            a[3].value = tablesum("orderdetail",".T.","Wholesale") 'grand total of wholesale field

            dim count as n
            count = a.size()
            dim i as n

            ' Dim the chart & series
            dim cd as Charting::ChartDataDefinition
            dim cs as Charting::ChartSeriesDefinition
            cd.series.add(cs)

            for i = 1 to count
            				dim cdd as Charting::ChartValueDefinition = new Charting::ChartValueDefinition()
            				cdd.value = a[i].value
            				cdd.label = a[i].name + " ("+cdd.value+")"
            				cs.data.add(cdd)
            next
            plotArrayData = cd
            end function
            And then the expression for the custom source would be

            plotarraydata(some_numeric_fieldname)
            There can be only one.

              Worked perfectly!

              I had 'frolicked' with the Custom data source, but I did not understand it well enough to make it work. Stan's example made it much more understandable!

              Thanks Stan

                Attached is a basic sample pie chart structure using V11, chart1 shows values from separate records in a table, and chart2 shows values from individual fields in single records. You may find it helpful.

                Thanks for the input from Stan
