Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Problem with Chart function

    I have created the following chart function:

    function plotArrayDataOrderDet2 as Charting::ChartDataDefinition(linkingFieldValue as n)

    'Create an array with some data to plot

    dim tbl As P
    tbl = Table.open("products",FILE_RO_SHARED)
    dim qry as P
    dim nrecs as N
    query.description = "Filter Products"
    query_order = ""
    query_filter = "Region="+alltrim(str(Var->DefaultRegion))
    query_flags = ""
    qry = tbl.query_create(query_flags, query_filter, query_order)
    nrecs = qry.records_get()
    IF (nrecs = 0) then
    qry.drop()
    ui_msg_box("Null Query","There are no records in the Query" ,UI_INFORMATION_SYMBOL)
    query.order = ""
    query.filter = ""
    END
    end if

    dim a[nrecs] as p
    dim Counter as N
    dim ProdName AS C
    dim TestVal As N
    Counter = 1
    tbl.fetch_first()
    while .NOT. tbl.fetch_eof()
    if Counter < 100 then 'just for testing!
    TestVal = tablesum("orderdetail","Prodnum = "+ alltrim(str(tbl.prodnum)) +".AND.Region = Var->defaultregion.and.BETWEEN(DateToProcess,{" + DTOC(Var->StartDate) + "},{" + DTOC(Var->EndDate) + "})", "DiscountPrice")
    if TestVal > Var->VarNum4 then
    ProdName = alltrim(str(tbl.prodnum)) '+ ": " + left(tbl.shortdesc,10)
    a[Counter].name = ProdName
    a[Counter].value = TestVal
    'Remember... DiscountPrice, unlike SpecialPrice, has already multiplied the Quantity
    Counter = Counter + 1
    end if
    end if
    tbl.fetch_next()
    end while

    dim count as n
    count = a.size()
    dim i as n

    ' Dim the chart & series
    dim cd as Charting::ChartDataDefinition
    dim cs as Charting::ChartSeriesDefinition
    cd.series.add(cs)

    for i = 1 to count
    dim cdd as Charting::ChartValueDefinition = new Charting::ChartValueDefinition()
    cd.value = format_data(a[i].value,",")
    cdd.label = a[i].name + " ("+cdd.value+")"
    cs.data.add(cdd)
    next
    plotArrayDataOrderDet2 = cd

    qry.drop()
    tbl.close()

    end function

    The function runs for a few seconds then ends with the following error: "Property is write only a[] not found"
    The offending line is: cd.value = format_data(a[i].value,",")

    How can I fix this?

    Re: Problem with Chart function

    Stick a debug(1) in just before count = a.size() and check the value of count at that point.
    There can be only one.

      Thanks Stan

      Count = 903
      Counter = 96
      nrecs = 903

        Re: Problem with Chart function

        You've dimmed a[] to the record count (903) but you're only assigning a[].name and a[].value up to 96.

        At least that looks odd on first glance.
        There can be only one.

          Re: Problem with Chart function

          I dont know how many elements will actually get populated, so I dim at the maximum... when the array is populated the index is sequential and stops at the actual number of data pairs.

            Hey, David,

            Your code would be easier to read if you preserved indents in formatting with CODE tags. Thanks.

              Doesn't this section go from 1 to 903?

              for i = 1 to count
              dim cdd as Charting::ChartValueDefinition = new Charting::ChartValueDefinition()
              cd.value = format_data(a[i].value,",")
              cdd.label = a[i].name + " ("+cdd.value+")"
              cs.data.add(cdd)

              What happens if you change to

              for i = 1 to counter
              dim cdd as Charting::ChartValueDefinition = new Charting::ChartValueDefinition()
              cd.value = format_data(a[i].value,",")
              cdd.label = a[i].name + " ("+cdd.value+")"
              cs.data.add(cdd)

                I modified the code so that the a[] array would contain only valid pairs... I also changed the counter as you suggested:

                end function

                We are making progress...
                The error msg is no longer displayed... but neither is the chart. The form with the chart displays... but a grey area appears where the chart should be.

                There is nothing fancy on the chart dialog. I just placed: plotArrayDataOrderDet2(Prodnum) in the custom source field.

                    if you preserved indents in formatting with CODE tags
                    Scroll down a bit, use the Go Advanced button, and you will see # next to the quote toolbar button. Or just wrap your code in

                    Code:
                    ...
                    [CODE] followed by [(forwardslash here)CODE]
