Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Reports disappeared

    Hi

Over the weekend, I added a couple of new tables and reports to my main database. Nothing was deleted or renamed.

Now 2 other reports (that I am aware of so far) have disappeared for the report menu. These reports have nothing to do with what I am working on except that they are in the same database. When I try to run them from a button on a screen that I had previouslty created, A5 reports that it cannot find the report layout.

From a backup of the data, I exported copies of the missing layouts and tried to import them through the "Import Layout" function and A5 reports that the files are present and do I want to overwrite them or save it as a new file name. So the files exist but A5 is not recognizing them. I would prefer not to lose the existing layouts as they are slightly more soffisticated than the backed up versions.

I have tried rebuilding the indexes and that has not helped.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Re: Reports disappeared

Try doing a dictionary.update() on each of the new tables. The reports are in the dictionary, so updating the indexes will not do anything for them.
if you can get exclusive use of all your tables and sets, a database compact might be in order.

      Re: Reports disappeared

      Hi Tom

      Thanks for the advice.

I have run a database compact and it has made no changes.

I hate to sound dumb but how do I run a dictionary.update()? I have never used XBasic, which I presume this is.

Can you provide me an example.

the table that I initially want to update is: r:\clients\alpha5\payroll_detail.dbf if that helps.

        DICTIONARY.UPDATE()

        Syntax

        DICTIONARY.UPDATE( Filename as C )

        Argument
        Description

        Filename
The fully qualified filename of a data dictionary.

        Description

The DICTIONARY.UPDATE() method updates a data dictionary.

        Example

        DICTIONARY.UPDATE("C:\Databases\Expressions Test\Inventory.Ddd")
        Open the interactive window
        paste in
        DICTIONARY.UPDATE("C:\Databases\Expressions Test\Inventory.Ddd")

        change the table and extension
        DICTIONARY.UPDATE("r:\clients\alpha5\payroll_detail.ddd")
use the enter key on that line.
        There can be only one.

          Thanks

I just learned something new. I had no idea that could be done.

Unfortunately, the missing reports have not reappeared. Does anyone have any other suggestion?

Stephen, tell us about your database.

            1) SQL or DBF ?

            2) Self-contained in a single folder ?

            3) Reports based on single table or a set of tables?

              Re: Reports disappeared

Sorry should have given this sooner.

I am running version 11 with the latest updates. There are multiple tables in the database. All tables are DBF and all are contained in a single folder. There are up to 3 users of the system.

The reports that have gone missing are both desktop reports and from the same 3 table set. Neither the tables nor the set structure has been altered in months. The tables are fairly simple, the top level table is a scheduling table with only 6 fields. The 2 tables below it are customer records with 73 fields and an employee table with 29 fields. The linking fields are a single field in each case. The database has been upgraded over many years and began as an Alpha3 database.

We are in the early stages of adding a Web portal but no tables have been affected by this yet.

Is there anything else that I can provide?

                Re: Reports disappeared

Its possible the reports were deleted by accident.

Suggest you restore a good backup of the database to a different drive / folder on your development machine. Open the old database there. Are the reports present?

                  Try to duplicate the set:

                    Re: Reports disappeared

do a dictionary.update with your set as the "table" name.

                        Hi

In the end, I could not know for sure what the problem was and had to recreate all of the missing reports from scratch. I lost at least 3 days work over this.

My suspicion is that I deleted a table that was no longer needed and it was associated with the reports and took tham as well but I can't be sure at all.

                          Re: Reports disappeared

Happns to me all the time. Can't figure it out. When I try to create a new report and use the same name it says that already exists. I think it happens when designing a report and somehow when saving it an error message appears and so does the report in the list of reports in the control panel. Very frustrating.

Same here, just putting finishing touches to a complex report then disappeared from list after saving, so annoying, especially since its still there but can't get at it!. Has happened several times in different workspaces. Using mysql not dbfs. Sorry just realised this is in V11 desktop apps - mine is a web app but same problem - disappears from control panel list.

No fix but what happens if you try this in the interactive?

                              ? a5.Report_Enum(2)

Does the report name show in the output?

Does the report open if you

                              a5_layout_design("your_report_name","report")
