Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Computer settings in the server to speed up Alpha Runtime

I have a server w2008 and temporarly 12 XP sp3 stations(next week all the stations will be w7).
Besides checking table indexes, proper sets and eliminating unwanted tables or procedures.
Is there any settings speciffically that applies to Alpha that I should set in the stations or the server to make sure the system works at peak performance?
is there any settings for shadow databases that would make the system works faster?
The data is in the server with 16 gig ram.
I optimize from every station and every station has a shadow Db.

    Any suggestions

Its been a while, but I do remember that we turned OFF opportunistic locking on the server.

If you have large tables and display browses, there is some code to turn off a calculation for EACH record displayed. This calc was put in a few releases ago to more accurately display the vertical scroll bar position. On large tables, it can wreck havoc. We also turn off the autobackup so that we aren't creating numerous copies of dictionary files every time we make a small modification.

These are both in the autoexec scipt.

    Code:
'turn off the "Auto Backup" feature so we don't make the folders expand any more
    a5.System_Mode_Set("auto_backup","F")
'turn off vertical scroll bar position adjustment
    a5.System_Mode_set("index_pseudo_position_cutoff","1")

You might do these in your startup of the application on the workspace:
      + " NODEBUG" + " -NODBCHECK"

In going from Server 2003 to 2008R2, when shadowing, my experience is that if you turn off opportunistic record locking, it will cut the speed in half.

Great tips, Thanks to all. I will start testing with the autoexc command lines and Monday I will be able to change the record locking as it needs to be rebooted to take effect.

            Hey Martin,

If I cut the speed in half does it run faster? Sounds like you're saying the change slows things down dramatically, right?

Re: Computer settings in the server to speed up Alpha Runtime

Yes - decreases performance by half - i.e., a test script that took 1 minute will take 2 (where you are reading and writing data from the server, not just incrementing a number, of course, since the issue is speeding up the network.) As far as I know, the changes for same are registry changes on the server and workstation, which are different from the ones in 2003, have not changed since I tested. When my client got a new server a few years ago, 2008R2, I tested and then turned it off. For the record, I have not had any index or data corruption with maybe 15 concurrent users.

I have no experience with Server 2012, but a tech told me it had an interface similar to Windows 8 - yuck!!!

                  Hi Mike,

You may want to check out my Record Locking tips and Network Issues related to speed tips pages for some additional info and links, as well as my free CSDA DiagInfo utility which reports these and many other settings of Alpha Five. Very shortly, I will be releasing a new version of CSDA Diag, that will allow looking at the returned information in a more organized fashion.

Re: Computer settings in the server to speed up Alpha Runtime

I have tried all the options mentioned above.
-NODEBUG -NODBCHECK did not make any difference.
Adding the code from Tom Henkel, did improve a fraction.
Opportunistic record locking did not changed anything.
I had another system running witht the same amount of data and the speed performance of the new app in Alpha, does not come close to the speed of the old system.
Example to find a record in the old system, < than 2 seconds in 90,0000 record
in Alpha may take less than 2 seconds or as much as 4 minutes.
The problem does not manifest at startup. As the the number searches increase, performance goes down.
I think hardware wise is not the problem as the old system works very well even with more fields; all day long.
To go from record to record, sometimes is instant, sometimes minutes in between.

I have eliminated all lookup auto codes, index only the needed fields.
One thing, Alpha creates additional indexes., like "" "" ascending all.
The main form that every one uses all the time is based on a table of 184 fields, size 2428(not based on a set)
I did create 5 indexes, Alpha places 3.
                    many date fields.

                    Any thing to look at

any memo fields? working on an app right now with similar problems and there were f memo fields on one tasble and it was corrupted. also there was a function for zip codes actually placed in the field rules that failed. That was sometimes 5 minutes. this is a 120,000 record db.

Mike, what was the source of the other db? VB, ???

No memo fields. Few character fields, some numeric, few logical and mostly date fields

you need to study "lightning query optimization"

also, it sounds to me like something is not quite right with your network
if is 10-100, should be 10-1000
check all network cards, and if 10-1000 check the switch and server to be sure all are working as advertised, and are all 10-1000

also, you may have something screening you to death - like virus program, etc

I have a client where there are maybe 10 concurrent users, and searching in table with well over 100,000 records that find records in less than 2 seconds

I have been thinking all along that the problem was hardware, specially when I am still in XP for stations, but I could not forget the fact that every other app is working well. They coexist with a VPN connected outside the state and that is working well.
Internet from all station is working well.
The other fact is that the same data in another db program had no problem at all and it was very fast.
So everything point at Apha. The program may not be at fault, there must be something I have set wrong or not set.
Otherwise there should be hundred of programers screaming at Alpha.
As I heard on a movie "I am desperado".
