Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I had a problem with a simple update.
Seemed to indicate a fault in indexing
I removed all your indexes and it then ran fine.

If thats not it then send you Update code

Jet, for us to see the field rules, the layouts, and the saved operations you must send the dictionaries supporting this table. If your operation involved a set of tables we need the other tables, indexes, their dictionaries, and the dictionaries for the set itself.

Tom, there is no need for layouts etc. Ray found something on the indexes, I dont know how they are corrupted/destroyed, I even used the one by Cal which is the AIms index rebuild which I purchased last year but it did not restore the working index. I have rebuilt all indexes but with the same error. So for the solution , remove all indexes first and add it again. Is there a way to avoid this? All the projects that I built cannot run operations(update, append etc.). I am worried if a client will experience this in the future that all of a sudden update operations cannot be executed anymore. By the way, all of the apps are running fine , not until today.

You can't predict what may go wrong. Generally this sort of thing happens during development cycles much more often.
Now is when you should copy of the indexes (with Aims) or your own. Have it ready in a maintenance procedure to restore IF there is a need.

I make sure I know which indexes I purposefully create. Alpha makes some of its own and it will do so in future if they are deleted.
I often recreate my indexes inside the re-index maintenance procedures for many tables, as opposed to production re-index. Doesn't seem to take longer.
AS you hit each snag, find the fix and build that in.

Nice to know if this error occurs during development time. I am worried on what the clients reaction when they found out that they can't rely on the app with peace of mind especially when it involves money for deposit, withdrawals and interest computations.

                  Jet,

Index corruption has been discussed many times on this board. There are a number of "typical" explanations for why this is happening. I suggest you investigate the cause and fix it.

If you experience index corruption regularly (even during development) something is seriously wrong on your system or with your app.

I am sure at some stage during development you have experienced a need for a forced close. As you have often talked about needing to reboot your PC etc.
Any kind of file open at the time is SUSCEPTIBLE to damage. Your woes about the disaster this WOULD cause clients and lose money. You must give them a stable system that doesn't need rebooting.
Have you had clients lose indexes, files?
I actually haven't in the last three years (exception during first couple of weeks settling in a new install) (ohoh! not too loud now). I do have procedures that get run and recreate indexes routinely, that do cross-audit tests on data etc.. and proactively check and fix.
As a developer that's your job. Sounds like you're writing for a bank - "money for deposit, withdrawals and interest computations"

Not a bank, just a small cooperative,I forgot to use the Aims Index rebuild, I should have used it. I am trying to make sure that something is causing the error that I posted here. I will not mention it here for now until I fully confirmed the cause of it so that others will not be misguided.I think I know the cause but I'm not sure yet. I will confirm it in 2 days so that I can fully test it.
