Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Lasso

I am trying to select many fields on one tab of a tabbed form. The selection tool does not work as described in the help notes which says:-
When you use the selection tool to lasso objects, the lasso will select any object it comes into contact with. For more precise selection, hold down the Minus "-" key on your numeric keypad while drawing the lasso, and only objects that are entirely within the lasso selection area will be selected.
As soon as you try to select fields, the tabbed object is selected and you start to drag it round the screen, it does not draw a rectange as described.
It used to work on a previous version years ago, anyone got any ideas if it is possible on Version 11 please?

    Re: Lasso

rightclick on the tabbed object pane and "select all objects" - then hold down the shift key and unselect individual objects on the pane

      Re: Lasso

I am using Windows 7 and when I right click I do not have "select all objects", but I can click on "Edit" from the Alpha Menu and click on "Select All". Unfortunately, that does not help because it then selects fields from all the tabs and I then have have even more fields to deselect.

          Re: Lasso

Thanks Martin, working with tabbed forms containing many fields is not always easy, I have now decided that for simplicity, I will now use separate forms for each tab. Think it was version 9 where the lasso feature did work correctly, tabbed forms also worked better, if you now have a tabbed object at the top of your form and you click on it and try to reduce the height using the bottom markers, it now raises the object instead of reducing the height, so you end up with a truncated object with the top tabs missing. Thanks for your help but on this occassion a change to a simpler design wins out.

            Re: Lasso

Well - I use tabbed objects in all my apps. I have not had the issues you describe. Changing the height and width of the tabbed object is constrained by the contents. If it is empty, you can make it any size you like; but if there are objects inside, they control the outer dimensions. You can move them and resize them to permit for a smaller object.

              Re: Lasso

Thanks again Martin, must be my machine, following all the rules that you have mentioned, I am able to attempt to raise the bottom of my tabbed object to reduce the height, without any fields in the way. Instead of reducing the height, it lifts the object up so that when I save and view the page, the top part of the object is missing, making it impossible for me to see or get to the different tabs. It does a few weird things with the Alpha program that only seem to happen on my machine. I will be replacing the PC later in the year so am happy to live with it till then.
              Many thanks again

                Hi Dave,

It sounds like you may already have made the leap, but if you have something like Logmein, send me a link, and I'll try to duplicate your issue, using my experience from my own apps.
