Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: FTP Commands

    hello

    this is my understanding ( open for correction)
    when you use ftp_makecommandlist
    1. you provide the ftp site name, not subdirectory name.
    2. the name of the source folder will be the destination folder and should be present
    for example
    ftp_command = ftp_makecommandlist("your_folder","ftp.your_domain_name","user_name","password")
    please note i did not add sub_folder name to ftp site. that's the reason, i think you have log in error.
    and when
    ftp_script_run("Transfer Files", ftp_command,.f.)
    is executed
    it will transfer files from "your folder" to "ftp.your_domain_name.com" to a directory with a name "your folder name". that directory should exist as far as i know.
    correction: it gets sent to the root directory.

    however if that's not the case you want to send from one folder to a different folder then
    ftp_put_file
    or
    ftp_put_file_multiple()
    should work.

      Re: FTP Commands

      Thanks Gandhi, that is correct. I concluded quite early on, and also from following Stan's advice, that if I can sucessfully do a file transfer using an FTP program, and using exactly the same FTP address, username and password settings, then the problem lies elsewhere, a setting either within Alpha5 or within Windows?
      Firewall looked favourite but my McAfee Firewall is set to allow full access for Alpha5. I am now hoping that some clever person will recognise another setting that I have not checked yet. Otherwise I will have to revert to a non Alpha solution.

        This line works for me but it may depend on how the site administrator has things set up.

        Login|houchensind/smathews|password
        There can be only one.

          Re: FTP Commands

          can you post your
          ftp_command = ftp_makecommandlist("your_folder","ftp.your_domain_name","user_name","password")

          you can hide sensitive info, of course.

            also do you need to send only one file always or many files?

              ------THE DEFINATIVE ANSWER------
              Hi thanks so much everyone for your assistance, I know from the other threads going back over 6 years that other users also have problems using Alpha 5 FTP commands. Nobody has been able to work out why they dont work on some machines, and I have only found one person that has found what he calls a work-around, but with a little bit of x-basic it really is a brilliant full solution.
              I have a table containing fields for FTP address, Username and Password, and this solution allows me to navigate to a desired record and simply press my Upload button. All of my prepared files in my local Upload folder are then quickly uploaded to the desired FTP site, everything done within Alpha and while the transfer is taking place there is a Dialog form showing the files being uploaded.
              I am using an FTP client called ScriptFTP from http://www.scriptftp.com/ google it and download for a 30 day trial, some sites are cheaper, from USD 37.95
              Many thanks to Brett Sinclair from New Zealand who pointed me in the right direction.
              I recommend that anyone else struggling with the Alpha FTP commands to give it a go.
