Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Rich Text Memo VS Text Memo

Has the Text Memo field bug been corrected? I have a database that was completely setup for Text Memo fields. However, due to a bug these fields would not print. The last work around that I know about was to change these to Rich Text Memo fields.

Overall this has taken care of many issues, but one of the main ones still stands. I cannot perform a cut and paste into a Rich Text Memo from another program such as word or outlook email. An due to a different bug sometimes the Rich Text Memo field does not always retain what I type into it even if I hit save. Gets real old to type a long paragraph 3 times hoping that the last time it will stick.

Re: Rich Text Memo VS Text Memo

Chris, I haven't had a problem printing text memo fields, using versions 9, 10 or 11 of Alpha Five in desktop applications. In all cases I use reports and drop the memo field into the report layouts just fine.

I don't have experience trying to paste material from Word or Outlook directly into RTF memo fields. However it does not surprise me that this might not work, since the binary formats are very different from each other.

So we have been running V11 since January. What is going to happen to my data if I change the database field from a Rich Text Memo back to a Text Memo?

Why not make a duplicate of a table, try it and see?
        There can be only one.

Chris, I suggest you put a copy of your database in a "sandbox" directory, where you can play to your heart's content without disrupting any "live" data.

Check this link for information on how Alpha is supposed to handle table restructures. Scroll down to find out how RTF memo fields are supposed to be handled. Strongly advise testing this in the sandbox before changing your live data structures.

Stan -I made a duplicate and it transfers over find.
Tom - I did check out your link and it also say's I should not have any issues.

This also might have something to do with i have not run any patches since we installed the software. I currently have the lastest patch installed. For some reason though I know that there was an issue with the text memo fields not printing. They show up on the preview screen, but would not print. Looks like they work fine now.

Thank you both for your help
