Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Search/Replace in Memo Field

    Hello all!

    I have what I thought was a simple problem, but although I've been searching through this forum, I can't seem to find an acceptable answer.

    I have a database with several hundred records. Each record has 10 memo fields. I need to create a script or function that can go through all these records and fields to find a particular word and replace it with another. I see where in the raw browse I can bring up each memo field and use the editor to do a search and replace, but I can't figure out how to create a script to go through all the records along with each record's memo fields.

    Is there a function for this or perhaps a script?

    Thanks,

    Charlie

    Re: Search/Replace in Memo Field

    Hi Charles,

    I don't have your answer, but can I give a bit of advice whether you choose to accept or not?
    The 10 memo fields in a table all are going to one fpt file on your disk. It is more common practice to separate memo fields to connected tables and separated so 2 notes don't go to the same memo. In other words, memos should be in separate tables because they sometimes get messed up.

    My opinion and how I would attack your problem: the first record in the table, it will be necessary to copy that each memo to a variable, make you changes, next field in the same record, repeat and next field repeat until complete with the record and move to the next record and repeat. Using 10 variables for the data, you could get pretty much the whole record, do the changes and repeat for each record. until eof()

      Are we permitted to know whether these are plain text or rtf? It will make a difference in the answer.

        Re: Search/Replace in Memo Field

        Thanks for your reply. I guess I understand this, however where I am getting confused is how to do the search and replace once I have the memo field in a blob variable. I just don't see the command out there to do that, but I may be missing it.

          Not sure Stan. I think they are just plain text.

            Re: Search/Replace in Memo Field

            For a plain text memo field you can read the contents with

            tbl = table.open("yourtablename")
            memo_contents = tbl.memofieldname

            to replace all instances of Charles with Jim-Bob you create a loop and in the loop

            tbl.change_begin()
            tbl.memofieldname = strtran(tbl.memofieldname,"Charles","Jim-Bob")
            tbl.change_end(.T.)

            Suggest you experiment on a duplicate of your table as this will replace

            Charles with Jim-Bob
            Charleston with Jim-Bobton
            St Charles with St Jim-Bob
            The river Charles with The river Jim-Bob

            etc.
            There can be only one.

              Thanks Stan! I was looking at that kind of idea, but was trying to find something that would be an exact match. Not sure if that is possible.

              Good idea to experiment on a test dbf.

              Thanks again.

                Re: Search/Replace in Memo Field

                If all the instances of what you want to replace are preceeded and followed by a space you can

                strtran(tbl.memofieldname," Charles "," Jim-Bob ")

                to eliminate internal/embedded matches. Also strtran() is case sensitive.
