Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Upgrading from A5V4 to A5V11 - help

I've installed A5V11 on my machine and I've copied over everything from the old A5V4 application (apm, apd, apx, dbf, ddd, ddm, ddx files).

When I open A5 I need to open a workspace, but since there are no adb files in my old application (that I know of), I'm required to create a new workspace.

I thought I could then copy the dbf files into my new workspace folder and bring them in using "New Table/Set". Although this does add the table into my workspace, that's pretty much all it does. I have no forms, sets, etc.....

I'm clearly doing something wrong. Is it actually possible to just open up my V4 application in V11 and see all my tables, forms, reports, etc....? Or is there some conversion I have to go through?

Re: Upgrading from A5V4 to A5V11 - help

    Try add tables instead

Having not seen what you have, not having a5v4 anymore and not remembering, it is very hard to say. To rule out possibilities, is your application in more than one folder? I also notice there is not cdx files.

Can you please list all file types in your app folder? There should be several files for each table, set and workspace. is it possible the adb/workspace is in a different folder?

    Edit after an extensive search:

A5v4 did use adb and associated files for the work space. Your forms and reports are in the files associated with the tables and sets, not the workspace files. Your scripts, udf's and other are in your adb associated files.

Is it possible that your .adb and associated files are in one folder and your tables are in another? May I suggest searching your computer(s) for *.adb?

Re: Upgrading from A5V4 to A5V11 - help

I have apd, apm, apx, cdx, dbf, ddd, ddm, ddx, fpt, mdx, sem, set, and sex type files in my app folder. As far as I know, everything for this app is in this one folder (at least that is how I remember it being designed about 15 years ago). No adb files anywhere.....

Re: Upgrading from A5V4 to A5V11 - help

cdx, dbf, ddd, ddm, ddx, fpt, mdx, sem, set, and sex
cdx, dbf, ddd, ddm, ddx, fpt contain data, indexes, forms, reports etc for the tables
sem, set, and sex contain set and forms, reports, etc that were built on the sets.
mdx is a index file, but don't remember this in v4.
        apd, apm???

How do you start the app?? shortcut? click on some file somewhere? is it on a network?

can the application be run currently from alpha5 version 4?

Re: Upgrading from A5V4 to A5V11 - help

Boy, am I ever confused....I can't find any adb files anywhere and all the files (as best I can determine) are in this one folder.

We start the app using a shortcut on the desktop which has the following:

          C:\A5\A5.EXE -d -i -a=c:\a5\fairview\fairview.adp

I find it especially confusing because there is no file called 'fairview.adp' in that folder (just a fairview.apd, fairview.apm and fairview.apx)

Thanks for all your help by the way, what I was hoping to be a somewhat simple upgrade/conversion is starting off pretty bad. I can't even get the app to start up!

Re: Upgrading from A5V4 to A5V11 - help

            is it a hidden file?
            Grabbing at straws?!
The shortcut starts in c:\a5 or c:\a5\fairview??
I do still suggest a c:\ drive search of "fairview.adp" - the shortcut cannot start a file that does not exist. It would just start a5.exe and stop.
also, I remember(unless I am wrong) all version of Version 5, the exe was named alpha5.exe? how did yours get to be a5.exe?

Re: Upgrading from A5V4 to A5V11 - help

Hopefully, someone will jump in here that is a lot more familiar with v4.

Re: Upgrading from A5V4 to A5V11 - help

The executable for Alpha Five is not called A5.EXE It's Alpha5.EXE So your shortcut seems to be pointing to something other than the Alpha Five executable on startup.

Are you the original author of this database, or was it written by someone else?

Re: Upgrading from A5V4 to A5V11 - help

Well, this whole thing just got real ugly (I think). I just discovered my client isn't running V4 they are running version V1.04! This explains why nothing is looking familiar to any of us. The last upgrade performed was when they went from Alpha Four to Alpha Five.

Now the real fun begins - I have to figure out how to get a 15 year old Alpha Five up-to-date.

I know my data is good (.dbf files), but the forms and reports in the .ddm and .ddd files are what I need to focus on now and so far I am unable to get them recognized in V11. I have a suspicion their format has changed a great deal since version 1.04.

Re: Upgrading from A5V4 to A5V11 - help

Yes, vers 1.04 is a whole different kettle of fish.

You might visit the Version 1 forum and search for message board threads discussing "upgrade" there.
