Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    exactly equal set link

    I haven't come across this as a problem before now, but now it's a problem for me and can't find the answer so far. Set linking field values need to be unique, right. Is there a way to make the set linking value follow the exactly equal to (==) instead of the equals to because there is no discrimination between upper case and lower case letters as a baseline so that ABCDEF and abcdef in set linkages are considered equal and I have a circumstance that a set link for a specific report based on a concatenation of 4 fields generates values that under these conditions produces linkage when I need them not to.

    dim v1 as C="AMD_W9871_A1035_B"
    dim v2 as C="AMD_w9871_A1035_b"

    ? v1=v2
    = .T.

    Re: exactly equal set link

    Probably not the most elegant solution, but off the top of my head you could create a calculated field that uses the MD5() or *CRC() functions to create a hash and then use that value to link the set.

    Code:
    ?MD5("AMD_W9871_A1035_B")
    = "6ba6fa3124c9717be386899fa33fb536"

    ?MD5("AMD_w9871_A1035_b")
    = "1bb5683a3769f9b2bc12ccc010c25921"

    ?*CRC("AMD_W9871_A1035_B")
    = 4294919559

    ?*CRC("AMD_w9871_A1035_b")
    = 4294955301

        Mike:
        I have not use == in a set link but maybe ASC() will work for you:
        Code:
        dim v1 as
        v1="AMD_W9871_A1035_"+asc("B")
        ?v1
        = "AMD_W9871_A1035_66"

        dim v2 as C
        v2="AMD_w9871_A1035_"+asc("b")
        ?v2
        = "AMD_w9871_A1035_98"

        ?v1=v2
        = .F.

          Or if you change the order of the concatenation:
          Code:
          dim v1 as
          v1="B-AMD_W9871_A1035_"
          ?v1
          = "B-AMD_W9871_A1035_"
          dim v2 as C
          v2="b_AMD_w9871_A1035_"
          ?v2
          = "b_AMD_w9871_A1035_"
          ?v1=v2
          = .F.

            jacob,
            Thanks so much! MD5() that's the ticket. Love adding new functions to my repertoire!

            G, How the heck are you? ASC is a great thought, but the difference in case are sometimes within an unpredictable central location of a multi-character string ( ex: WAS and WaS ), so can't key in on which character is different.

              I am fine, thanks for asking.
              You could do this:
              Code:
              dim v1 as C="AMD_W9871_A1035_B"
              dim v2 as C="AMD_w9871_A1035_b"

              v1_H=*to_hex(v1)
              ?v1_H
              = "414D445F57393837315F41313033355F42"

              v2_H=*to_hex(v2)
              ?v2_H
              = "414D445F77393837315F41313033355F62"

              ?v1_H=v2_H
              = .F.
              Or, if you want to go nuts you could covert to binary..don't think it will work though.

                  Re: exactly equal set link

                  case_preserve(). Alpha uses this to create an index when you ask for a field rule lookup of 'previous values'.

                    Thanks Bill.
                    It becomes a linkage by expression case_preserve("<linking_field_name>") in the set design, and works perfectly. Funny how many years I've been doing this and this never surfaced, and apparently the inexact linkage not well known.
