Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Peter,

    You just want to temporarily set restrict_change for certain users?

    f = form.load("formname")
    f.restrict_change = .T.
    f.Show()
    f.activate()
    There can be only one.

      Thanks Stan. As I have been saying repeatedly here, that doesn't work. But yes, that is what I want.

        Re: Control form's data entry/edit programmatically

        Worked for me when I tested it, I thought.

        Retested, still works if I understand what you want.

        Normally unrestricted form opened with suggested code, cannot modify any field values.

        Added

        f.restrict_enter = .T.
        f.restrict_delete = .T.

        cannot enter or delete and all three options are greyed out in the Records menu.

          Well, it doesn't work for me. Tried in v11 & v10.

            Sent you an example. Let's see how that operates on your end.

                Stan's example worked. Here's the problem. Something screwy about Alpha Sports. I figured testing it there was safe. It seems to work everywhere but A-Sports. Go figure? Now I know this should have worked all along - because I've used this code and variations of it about a billion times in the past w. no problems!

                Thanks Stan. For bonus points tell me why it doesn't work in A-Sports?

                  It works like you say. What I'm really trying to do is something like this from an external script:

                  f=OBJ("Edit_Customer_Info")
                  f.restrict_change = .t.

                  But no-go. Seems like you should be able to control the form programmatically?
                  Controlling from the interactive window is not the same as running code from an external script.

                  The interactive window is 'special'. ( IE it's own workspace.)

                  Build your test more in tune with how it'll actually run.. make scripts to open the form, then another to change the restrictions. A global pointer is a good idea..

                  Works much better..

                    Peter,

                    Your code works fine in A5v9. It fails (from the interactive window) in both A5v10 and A5v11.

                        For half-credit.

                        It isn't AlphaSports per se. Add my tables to AlphaSports and the restricts still work. It must be the AlphaSports forms. Likely they were just updated for newer versions and not recreated.

                          Right, I had done that.

                          Yeah, I was thinking along those lines - after I wasted 4-hours pursuing this wild goose-chase! And I deliberately used Sports thinking I was safe for testing. Geeze!

                            Okay, now that that is out of the way, here's a question: Let's say forms might have one or more embedded browses where I don't know the name of the browse(s) or how many there might be.

                            f.restrict_change = .T. works on the form level, not the embed level. Is there a method to disable any and all embeds? I know I can do f.disable() but that also kills search functionality. Any ideas?
