Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Control form's data entry/edit programmatically

    This works:
    Edit_Customer_Info.Allow_Change(.f.)

    These do not:
    Edit_Customer_Info.restrict_edit = .t.
    Edit_Customer_Info.restrict_change = .f.
    Edit_Customer_Info.restrict_enter = .t.

    Edit_Customer_Info.restrict_delete = .t.

    What am I missing?

    Re: Control form's data entry/edit programmatically

    hi, Peter.

    do you need to resynch or refresh the form after changing these properties?

    which has priority restrict_edit or restrict_change ? These seem to create the possibility for conflict when one is set true and the other false.

      Peter,
      Might be a typo in your post but you have .f. for restrict_change instead of .t. If you don't want changes restrict_change should be true. Restrict_edit does not apply to data entry but to editing the layout itself.

            No doubt.

            Thanks for all the replies. My point is those commands don't seem to work. I'm running them from the interactive. Edit_Customer_Info is an Alpha Sports form. Try it and let me know if they work for you.

            Thanks

              I don't think you can test this behavior from the interactive window. Put your code in a button on the form, or run it from an event in the form itself. ( doesn't the interactive window run in a different session than your form ? )

              Testing here shows that

              parentform.restrict_change = .t. will block edits while
              parentform.restrict_change = .f. will permit edits

              when each is run from a button on the form

                don't know if this will help you?

                On fetch form
                if var->ulevel >= 3 then ' users have 3 levels 1 can do any 2 can do most and 3 can view, but not edit
                This.allow_change(.F.)
                else
                This.allow_change(.T.)
                end if

                  Thanks Tom,

                  It works like you say. What I'm really trying to do is something like this from an external script:

                  f=OBJ("Edit_Customer_Info")
                  f.restrict_change = .t.

                  But no-go. Seems like you should be able to control the form programmatically?

                    Re: Control form's data entry/edit programmatically

                    I think that should work, provided the form you want to control has already been opened.

                    An alternative would be to set globals in the calling script, then use the onInit or OnActivate events of the form you want to control to set or re-set form properties, depending on the current values in the globals.

                        Peter,

                        copied form xbasic for everyone
                        Preventing any changes to a form
                        Perhaps you want to prevent the user from making any changes on your form. That is simple in Xbasic. The
                        new properties we will use are:
                        <form_pointer>.restrict_enter
                        <form_pointer>.restrict_change
                        which are akin to changing the properties of the form in design mode, and the property
                        browse_name.browse.readonly
                        which changes the editing properties of a browse.
                        Here is the script:
                        p = topparent.this
                        filter = "Customer_id = "+quote(Customer_id.value)
                        query.filter = filter
                        query.order = ""
                        'Open the layout_type showing just the records that satisfy the filter
                        DIM Shared f as P
                        DIM layout_name as c
                        layout_name = "Customer history"
                        f = :Form.viewqueried(layout_name,query.filter, query.order,"hidden" )
                        f:Tables:invoice_header.filter_expression="between(date,{1/1/96},{12/31/96})"
                        f:Tables:invoice_header.order_expression="date"
                        f:Tables:invoice_header.query()
                        f.restrict_enter=.t. ' No enters allowed at form level
                        f.restrict_change=.t. ' No changes allowed at form level
                        f:browse1.browse.readonly=.t.' No enters or changes allowed for invoice header browse
                        f.show()
