Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    uniqueness test problem on active link mysql

    Please help,

    Can alpha five perform a uniqueness test on an active link mysql table? If yes how do you make it work? been trying to do this but alpha five would still accept duplicate value in a field even though uniqueness test is active.

    Re: uniqueness test problem on active link mysql

    I do not work with active link tables or desktop so I may not be able to direct you to right method.
    but as I said earlier you can ask MySQL to check for uniqueness by defining an index and make the index unique and MySQL will do the checking
    for you.

      looks like you don't need field rules and mysql index, after all.
      you can write a xbasic routine and display a message warning of the presence of a duplicate value.

        Got the same problem. Can you send the code for the Xbasic?

          Re: uniqueness test problem on active link mysql

          Have you thought of making the unique field a Primary Key Field in your SQL Table?
          Then you get the error message if you try and duplicate.
          Or did you want something different? Like MUST NOT EXIST in the Index?

          Just tested this some more. The Surrogate Pk created by Alpha doesn't prevent a duplicate even if the Field Rules say that the value should be unique.
          It looks as though you will have to rely on the Server side to trap the error.
          Using cross file validation doesn't work either.

            hello

            here is one way of doing
            http://screencast.com/t/wTpRrmjW9

            Code:
            dim conn as sql::Connection
            dim args as sql::Arguments
            dim sqlSelect as c
            dim rs as sql::ResultSet
            dim result as l
            dim flag as l
            sqlSelect = "Select * FROM alpha_table1 WHERE string1 = :newString1"
            dim name1 as c
            name1 = topparent.string1.value
            result = conn.open("::Name::local_MYSQL")
            if result then
            	args.add("newString1",name1)
            	flag = conn.Execute(sqlSelect, args)
            	if flag then
            		rs = conn.ResultSet
            		flag = rs.nextRow()
            		if flag = .t. then
            			ui_msg_box("Duplicate","The name is already on file",UI_ATTENTION_SYMBOL)
            			conn.Close()
            			'here you can write more code if you want to do something with that situation
            		end if
            	end if
            	conn.Close()

            end if
            no field rules declared in the active link table
            no mysql index created on that field
            since i do not work with desktop i do not know how to write some more code to do few things like resending the focus to the same string1 field.
            thanks for reading

              Nice catch Govindan. Now all we need is the person who started this post to join in.
