Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Table Close error

    I am trying to close 3 tables and I using this script.

    dim tbl as c
    dim name[3] as C
    name[1] = "customer.dbf"
    name[2] = "product.dbf"
    name[3] = "vendor.dbf"
    for i = 1 TO 3
    tbl=name[I]
    tbl.close()
    next i

    Gives an error for tbl.close as argument is incorrect data type and tables are not closing.

    Is there any other way, other than click the red box with an x in top right hand corner

    Re: Table Close error

    Untested but should work.

    dim tbl as c
    dim name[3] as C
    name[1] = "customer"
    name[2] = "product"
    name[3] = "vendor"
    for i = 1 TO 3
    tbl=table.get(name[I])
    tbl.close()
    next I

    Would you try to open a table with

    tbl=name[I]

    ?
    There can be only one.

      Re: Table Close error

      Thanks for the response. But I got an error

      tbl=table.get(name[I]) name not found

      The tables have been opened by another operation and I would like to have them close as pat of the operation.
      They are a result of some SUM process.

      The reason they are open is that if I make the process of SUM, and make them silent operation, Yes, they close, but everytime I run the process, it does create a new table, so only after a week of use I will have about 30 tables.
      Some of those summarized tables have operation based on them, Deleting them, delete the operation as well.
      The replacing part, does not delete the operation, based on those summarized tables.

              Thanks G. Gabriel, Stan and James

              Results Dim the TBL to P, still gives the same error as tbl is incorrect data type.

              Using evaluate_template(name[i]+".close()") no errors, but the tables still show in the screen, they do not go away.
              I did use a 2x4 on the screeen and the tables were gone and so my monitor.
              I got a new monitor. what else can I try?

                  Re: Table Close error

                  I saw the original script with dim tbl as c where it should have been as p but I chose to get away from all of that to minimize the confusion. You don't need an array either, a list will do.
                  You don't need a list either, if you are closing these specific tables:
                  customer.close()
                  product.close()
                  vendor.close()

                    You need to explain the context.

                    In AlphaSports I get this result.

                    Code:
                    a_tbl = table.open("customer")
                    b_tbl = table.open("product")
                    c_tbl = table.open("vendor")
                    ? a_tbl.name_get()
                    = "customer"
                    ? b_tbl.name_get()
                    = "product"
                    ? c_tbl.name_get()
                    = "vendor"

                    dim tbl as P
                    dim name[3] as C
                    name[1] = "customer"
                    name[2] = "product"
                    name[3] = "vendor"
                    for i = 1 TO 3
                    #tbl=table.get(name[I])
                    #tbl.close()
                    #next I

                    ? table.isopen("customer")
                    = .F.
                    ? table.isopen("product")

                        try something simple - just close one table - then check to see if it is still in use - could be you can't close it

                          Thanks to all for the attention. I got the solution thanks to you all.

                          ------------------------------------try 1
                          dim tbl as p
                          dim name[3] as C
                          name[1] = "customer.dbf"
                          name[2] = "product.dbf"
                          name[3] = "vendor.dbf"

                          for i = 1 TO 3
                          tbl=table.get(name[I])
                          tbl.close()
                          next i
                          ------->error tbl.close as argument is incorrect data type

                          -------------------------------- try 2
                          dim tbl as p
                          dim name[3] as C
                          name[1] = "customer.dbf"
                          name[2] = "product.dbf"
                          name[3] = "vendor.dbf"

                          for i = 1 TO 3
                          evaluate_template(name[i]+".close()")
                          next i

                          ------->no errors but do not close

                          ------------------------------------- try 3
                          customer.close()
                          product.close()
                          vendor.close()

                          ------->error customer.close() as argument is incorrect data type
                          --------------------------------

                          Solution:

                          DefaultBrowse_customer.close()
                          DefaultBrowse_product.close()
                          DefaultBrowse_vendor.close()

                          Puff, they are gone and no need for 2x4s

                          It all came in sight by the question from Mr. Gabriel The tables? or the forms/browse?
                          and from Stan
                          ? table.isopen("customer")
                          = .F.

                          The tables were closed. the defaultbrowser is what it was shown. I did not realized the difference until now.
                          I never knew that we do not see actual tables, but browsers.
                          Again, thanks to all.
                          ? table.isopen("customer") nice tip.

                            BTW:
                            1-if the browse is open, (if it is shown, it is open, but it could be open but not shown..add more to the confusion) the table is open.
                            2-table.close() does not close a table and its all open forms and browses, but rather closes a table that was opened via xbasic.
                            3-If you have an open form or a browse, then you open the same table via xbasic, i.e. using table.open(), it will open another session of the table. you don't see it, it's a ghost, but it's there and thus to close it, you need to use table.close()
                            4-Lastly, rather than keep closing all open broswes, i.e. rather than opening a second one and then close it with this script, don't open it in the first place.
                            Look into:
                            if is_object()

                              The light was bright now is dark. Thanks.
                              if it is shown, it is open, but it could be open but not shown
                              In my case what I though were tables, were defaultbrowsers. When I used the ? table.isopen("customer") I got = .F.
                              So the tables has been closed in the process, just the defaultbrowse was left open.

                              At some point I will need to bring how all this came about it.
                              Perhaps I should start a new thread, since I can not tell the difference between my inability or the way Alpha functions.
