Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Error: Can Not Open Table

    I wanted to Pack a table and received an Error Can Not Open Table. Table acts correctly and other tables pack okay.
    So I went to Work Space Compact. A similar error is generated but it continues and packs the other tables (I assume).

    Why does this occur?

    Re: Error: Can Not Open Table

    Because the table is open for some reason. There is code to close a/all tables.

    I do this, my opening form is based on a dummy table that has one field with nothing in it. when I pack all the tables or compact the database, the dummy always tosses and error because it is open. No big deal for me, but I don't know your circumstance.

    If you search the links listed at the bottom of this thread, you will see much more.

      Additionally, in Windows explorer, look at the file list. There will be four or five (*.ddd, *.ddm, *.ddx, *.cdx, *.dbf and maybe *.fpt.) files associated with the table. If there is a *.$$anything, i.e. with the same name as the table, that is why the table can't be opened for packing. It's safe to delete that file, then try again.

        That's what I would think but on a local machine (no network so no users) it is closed. Now, you would think Alpha would know that and advise that certain files need to be closed. In order to get to the command of course I would have had to open one of the tables.

          Hello Dennis
          Here is a code snippit which packs all tables in your app (displayed in control panel) and ignores open tables.
          dim tlist as C
          tlist = A5.TABLE_ENUM(4)
          for each sel_t in tlist
          if file.filename_parse(sel_t,"NE") = "Filemanager.dbf" .or. file.filename_parse(sel_t,"NE") = "Controller.dbf" then
          goto continue
          end if
          tbl = table.open(sel_t)
          tbl.pack()
          tbl.close()
          continue:
          next
          In this example, I have two tables open Filemanager and controller so I tell the for each to skip them if the sel_t variable = then.
          I have to use filename_parce() to strip the path to the table since it is not needed.

          Hope this helps

            Re: Error: Can Not Open Table

            Dennis,

            It's not unusual (especially during development) for scripts to leave tables open. this can happen when the script fails to close tables prior to ending. It can also happen if the script stops prematurely.

            From the control panel you can use the "Database information" option on the "File" menu to see if any tables are open. I use this before compacting my development databases. Very handy.

              Under FILE is see WORKSPACE INFORMATION which I'm thinking would be the same thing?

                Re: Error: Can Not Open Table

                The tables are all closed. As per Workspace Information: OPEN=no on all tables.

                  Dennis, yes. They changed the terminology not long ago. "Database" = "Workspace" in the latest releases.

                    Also, Alpha has stuff stored in the registry, similar to the $$xxx that can cause this
                    Check the code archive - there are functions for removing them - otherwise you need to run a registry cleaner
