Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    table.in_use(), cannot close the table

I have a workspace with two tables, one form, two browses, one report, four toolbar scripts and four scripts.

When I open the database, go to the tables/sets tab, click on file, workspace information, one of the tables is open.

I did a search on the board and if I run table.in_use() from the interactive window, I get a .T. But there is nothing open as all I did was to open the workspace. I cannot do a compact, backup or zip the database.

I tried various routines I found on the board, but so far, nothing is working. Everything was normal before today. I did do a lot of editing today primarily running a search and opening a browse to show the results of the search. I was either fetching through the records or running a query on the problem table and writing data to a temp table. I'm using property_to_string() of the offending table to write to the temp table.

Martin Cole put some functions on the board to clean the registry. I tried running them, but they did not seem to do anything.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Find and delete any .mpx files in the database directory, the private, and shared directories.
    There can be only one.

There are no .mpx files in the single folder. There are just 18 file in all in one folder which is located on my desktop.

Sorry, have no idea what the "single folder" might be.

.mpx files are temporay query files. They may be found in the database directory, in your private directory, and in the shared directory.

Thank you Stan. I misunderstood what you were trying to tell me.

Anyways, I solved the problem. I turned the computer off and went to bed.
Got up and turned the computer back on and now all is well.

So I guess the problem possibly could have been some temporary files that were
          removed with a system reboot.

One of my clients that runs shadowed from an enterprise server about twice a year has a problem where a file is open on the server. The only way it can be closed is by calling IT and having them close it. I'm not certain the cause, but I think it is caused by IT running a push or disabling the server when the software is doing nightly maintenance at 11:45PM thru midnight that causes one or more files to be left open.

There is some 3rd party softwatre you can get to deal with it, if you have administrative access to the server.

I have had similar reports - rarely with the same client but across many, possibly once a year - especially with software in which I have to manually lock records - and a terminal freezes or goes off at an inopportune time. With standard MS OS controlling the locks on the server, the lock may not be released. That terminal upon restarting cant reset that lock and is in fact locked out as well.
The only stock answer I give before seeing if the problem is persistent, is log off all users and restart the server. 99% of the time works.

I wrote a simple .BAT file that opens the folder and deletes all MPX files each time it executes. I've set it to run each day while the program is open. This eliminates teh MPX problem as well as deletes other text files that get dumped into the folder.
