Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Check box slow

I've looked but couldn't find any similar experiences..so here goes.
I have a table with a logical field. When I display that field with a checkbox, it takes 10 to 15 seconds for it to change state.
If I display it as a text field (i.e., yes/no, t/f) it is instantaneous.
Is there something about the graphic check box I ought to know?

    Same issue you posted earlier?

    Still no help, I suppose.
    There can be only one.

No, thought I'd phrase it a little differently and see if any lights go off. Also tried some other observations.

I am having some trouble keeping checkboxes "always modeless" in v11. You also might check what your form is doing when it enters edit mode and when the record is saved.

Once upon a time, I was in class bored to hell, so my mind started to wonder in wonderland..The professor, originally from India and a repeat serial joker, noticed that I was in a different planet. So, in his attempt to make fun of me, he suddenly turned to me and asked me a question. All I knew at the time was that he was looking at me and waiting for an answer! I had no idea what was he asking nor what was the subject matter in the first place. As I hesitated, he, being a funny guy, laughed and said..Gabriel, Don't you remember me asking you this same question once before?! ...Gabriel, you are lucky we are not in India. Back home, they would hang you if you don't answer the same question you have been asked before!..

Everybody in the class started to laugh..

Feeling terribly embarrassed, I had to very quickly think of a come back..I turned to him and said: You are the lucky one, because here in New Orleans, they will hang you if you ask the same question twice!

Of course, I had the final laugh..

Hope you are not in New Orleans!
And while we're at it, instead of re-phrasing a question that doesn't need re-phrasing..how about answering the questions posed to you in the first thread?

            Re: Check box slow

Yea, well, thanks for your help.
Now, on to the problem..and maybe solution. In this table (just the parent) I have 6,000+ records. Very slow toggling check boxes and/or radio buttons or even state buttons. However, if I knock down the table to 2000 records or so, the check boxes toggles become almost instantaneous. I tested this by having the entry form event on initialization run a saved query (records > the magic amount). And that does the trick. Now, how stable entering records is in that environment I can't say..but it's worth a try. There might be other ways of doing this but this might be a step to a solution.

BTW, rephrasing a question or reinterpreting an answer can lead to innovation.

6000 records is not a lot.
              something else is the matter.

Can you trace back when did this become a problem? Has it been going on since you went over the 2000 records?
I don't think so. Something else, either in the form itself or one of the records that makes it act that way. This might take a bit of investigative trials and errors to pin point the culprit.
For a starter, design a simple form, with couple fields along with that check box field and see how it works.
BTW, I do not see any advantage to a logical field. In the past I had other issues with them and chose to go with a one character field that does the same job.

Yea, I'm kind of thinking that a logical might not be the best way to do this and even at this point would be easier to change.

So, here's what I'm doing (well, when I get time), I'll see if I can divide and conquer and maybe even rebuild the DBF file. Maybe there's something broken in that. Strange though that a query speeds it up that much. I can select via query the first 2000 records or the last or anything inbetween. But when I start getting close to 3 or 4 thousand it just bogs down. This is now getting interesting. Before it was just a problem.

Forgot to say: And I will start a new form and see if I can chase it that way. I did delete and recreate the checkboxes on the current form but works the same. Thanks for your input!

You could try to see if you get the same behavior in a default form.

                      Re: Check box slow

Well, one thing led to another and the default form was fine.

So I went to the 'bad' form, duplicated it, and started removing fields. This took some time but at one point I found the problem. I had a real-time calculated field..a summation field--on the form not on a report. I removed that and it seems to be okay now. It had NOTHING to do with the check boxes but there was something going on and that's how it manifested itself. So when the query narrowed the records, the speed was fine. But I did notice it was not linear. Adding more and more records caused it to bog down a lot.

I'm going to sleep on it but that's where I'm at now.

Conclusion to problem: Don't put a running summation calculation on a form. Problem solved.

Instead of a calc field, I use a variable that I populate with a 'recalc' button when I want to see a total. Most often used when opening a form showing all records that will then be filtered. You can set the filter/ query then 'auto update' the variable by sending a push to the button.

Can anyone tell I am a bit bored tonite and so am going over old posts...? :)

One other thing I've discovered. Ensure that your browse or form is not in an indexed mode or being displayed in some kind of order.

Over at Learning Alpha a suggestion was made to perform the calculation in the OnFetch event of the form and update the variable on the form. Haven't tried it that way, but it might work better when changing a checkbox field, since no index is involved.
