Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    error message opening set

    Getting the following error message. The memo tables are separate dbf's related in a 1to1. I can open the memo tables independently.

    1. Make sure the set is pointing at the tables that you think it is.

    The set may be looking at a different directory or something else may be wrong.

    Control panel - files/set tab

    Right click the set - utilities - repair set

    Look at the complete name of the file of each table...

    If needed, you can point to a different table and save.

      I have narrowed down the problem to one table that it can't seem to open or find named memo_Client.dbf. If I have a working backup can I just copy over the non corrupted files? Which files would I copy?

        A memo file error is usually indicative of a problem with a ".fpt" file associated with one of the tables in the set. Check the files in the directory and see if one of them, a ".fpt" file is enormous. if so, you have a corrupt memo file and it needs to be repaired. The memo file is where alpha stores any "Memo-type" information associated with that table.

          Make sure you have copies of everything before you start...

          I'd copy all of the files for that table and replace what you have..

          Do you have objects (forms, browses, reports,.... etc) or field rules for that table that may be different than the older backup?

            Yep. Corrupt or deleted .ftp file is the likely culprit.

            Try this AFTER a backup or two.

            <TBL>.MEMO_CHECK()

              Other than .ftp what other files have to be copied?

                It might be best to do a restore, presuming you have a backup?
                Try this
                A5_RepairSetStructure()

                You will need to read the documentation regarding files to be copied over. It's all in the help text.

                  Re: error message opening set

                  The relevant help file topic is "Alpha Five File Types" I believe. Here's the link via the wiki.

                  If a native Alpha Five table contains a memo field, the data you've entered is stored in the DBF, FPT and CDX files. If there is no memo field in the table the data you've entered is stored in the dbf and CDX files alone. there will be no FPT file in this case. Tthe designs for layouts based on the table are stored in the dictionaries for the table, along with field rules, and other objects, including long field names, long table names, etc.

                  Each set has its own dictionaries.

                  Check the help file material for details.

                    Ended up using a backup about 5 days old and re entered the data.
