Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Newbie printing issue

    I apologize for such a basic question, but in some ways I don't even know how to "search" for the answer as I can't seem to define my keywords. The issue is that I am trying to print a report based on the current record. I do the following:
    1. Choose action scripting
    2. Add New Action
    3. Chose Reports
    4. Chose Preview a layout
    5. Chose the report name
    6. Check Display Print/Preview at Runtime
    7. Chose current record only
    8. Save the Action
    9. When I "run" the form and depress the button I am prompted correctly for Print/Preview. However immediately after that the "Select Filter" appears to chose whether I want to sort it, or print a range, etc.

    Obviously this is superflous and will just confuse my client.

    When I "print" an invoice in Alphasports it appears correctly. I have looked at the code generated by the wizard and they are both identical except for the report name.

    Code Generated For My Form

    'Preview a report, label, letter, form or browse layout. You can specify which records to preview.

    record_number = current_record_number()
    query.filter = "recno() = " + record_number
    query.order = ""

    'Prompt user whether to print, or preview the layout. Set default to Preview
    prompt_result = ui_get_print_or_preview("Preview ")
    If prompt_result = "Print" then

    :Report.Print("1Annual_Inspection",query.filter,query.order)

    Else if prompt_result = "Preview" then
    :Report.Preview("1Annual_Inspection",query.filter,query.order)
    End if

    Code Generated For AlphaSports

    'Preview a report, label, letter, form or browse layout. You can specify which records to preview.
    record_number = current_record_number()
    query.filter = "recno() = " + record_number
    query.order = ""

    'Prompt user whether to print, or preview the layout. Set default to Preview
    prompt_result = ui_get_print_or_preview("Preview ")
    If prompt_result = "Print" then

    :Report.Print("Invoice",query.filter,query.order)

    Else if prompt_result = "Preview" then
    :Report.Preview("Invoice",query.filter,query.order)
    End if

    Obviously, I am missing a setting somewhere although I am baffled as to where to find it. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Re: Newbie printing issue

    I've read your post 3 times and I don't see a question. Probably just me. Could you restate the issue?

    However immediately after that the "Select Filter" appears to chose whether I want to sort it, or print a range, etc.
    Is that the issue? Set the filter and order in the report itself. Order should be blank. Filter should be blank.
    There can be only one.

      Make sure that you have the additional filter criteria set to 'none' in the report itself.

        Thank you both for your prompt response. I have spent well over 20 hours trying to find out this answer. It never dawned on me to look at the report properties. Because of the construction of the Action Script, I thought everything was being controlled through the generation of the xbasic code. I would ask that Alpha put in some kind of pop-up help window when print current record is selected to instruct a person to change the filter criteria in the report itself. Would have been helpful, but then again maybe I am the only one that has experienced this.

          You have to build a filter, expression and manipulate with this filter before print a report. see AlphaSports - Reports - Invoices

            Hi David,
            When I am building a new report, I start with the basic structure that will return multiple records. Then I add the prompt for the filter to see how my filter works. If that works as expected, I save a copy adding 'quick' (or Q_) as a prefix and clear the report filter and set the prompt to none. Then I use that report in a button script for the current record displayed on my form. That way you have 2 copies and only need to edit the first and can resave to the 'quick' version and make the stated modifications in the report properties.

              That is a fabulous idea. I think I will integrate it in my builds from now on. Thank you.

                One thing about the basics is they create some good habits - glad I could help.
