Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Security in Desktop not working?

Hi guys, after setting up security as I normally do within my programs, I set a master password then set up some users, I then logged out and back in again and expected to see the user log in screen but it failed to show ?
I can access all my files ok but I cannot get back in to change the security settings etc.
I ran the following script and it tells me I am not logged in as an administrator?
    A5_Security_Option("Remove Database Password")

Has anyone any idea's why the User log in screen does not appear?
I have backups from a few days back, but am reluctant to restore as I have made many changes.
Not sure which files are the security ones, as I am wondering if itís possible to just overwrite those ones.

Any help on this will be very much appreciated.

Re: Security in Desktop not working?

Hi Tom mate, must be honest I really cannot imagine why things went wrong on this.
I have set up this desktop security stuff up many times in the past without encountering any problems whatsoever.
I will make a backup prior to trying this again I can assure you of that.

      Hope you are well Tom.

      Best regards

Re: Security in Desktop not working?

Isn't it quicker to just remove security and set it up again. Just the basics to start and see if it takes.
Who knows what may have gone wrong or when.

What I have found really functional is a separate ADB with nothing but security set up.
All one needs to do in a new setup is activate the master password and point security to that.
ESPECIALLY for clients - when you update their A5 prog you dont overwrite THEIR security setup.

Re: Security in Desktop not working?

Hi Ray, that's sound very interesting, I like the idea of a separate security database.

The problem I have is that the "Set Workspace Password" option appears to be locked. I cannot get in to do anything.
I do know what Master password I used, but when running a script to try to remove Master password, it tells me I am not the administrator ?.... but I am.

          Bit odd that

Ray, that's an interesting idea. Could you supply more details about the sequence and setup you use? Thanks. -- tom

Re: Security in Desktop not working?

              Sure Tom

I attach an ADB that I use,- (strangely) named security.
to try it out in principle;-
              1. Create a new or use an existing DB without security ("main").
              2. Create a folder below that, called perhaps "security" and unzip my attached 5 files into that.
              3. Load up your "main" adb and set up security pointing to the subfolder (admin password "AlphaBeach")

Add users whatever you like. You can set up another "main1", and add the modified security folder. Your modified settings apply to that too.
When I send my "main" DB to clients I dont send the security folder and thereby not trample on their user settings.

Have a look at the one I sent - I cant remember more than it has nothing else but an admin password, maybe some users.
              Attached Files

Re: Security in Desktop not working?

Sorry - omitted - any users you select will have the first three letters of the name used as the password, lowercase.
Ray - password ray will likely be one
Change all or any to your own and try it on another database.
BTW you change it through the "main" db not the security db

                  thanks, Ray.

Will study this ... looks very promising.
