Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Network Optimization Problem

I've been chasing some speed problems and thought I might try Network Optimization.

I receive an error that says Network Optimization failed "Can not close the main table for the session".
Best I can tell the table is not open and I moved the database to another machine (controlled environment) and I get the same message.
Has anyone come across this and why would I not be able to "close the main table"?

Did a search for that here but nothing turned up.

    AI:
The app automatically opens a default form. If I turn that feature off, I can create the shadow. That's kind of a pain though. Is there a way I can positively close all the tables? I have an escape to get to the control panel, BTW.

      Re: Network Optimization Problem

You network optimize once from each workstation to create the shadow. After that you Refresh shadow which will not require that you close the main form.
      There can be only one.

Tell us where everything is located, and how you log in to your database (workspace).

i.e. Have you installed Alpha Five to your local work station, and are you running it there against a workspace that's stored on a shared drive on a different machine?

Stan and Tom, I knew that but we have a lot of stations so was hoping for something streamlined :-) You guys are so great..appreciating your help.
I have the app and database in U:\databases\mros. That's a networked drive. I let the shadow go the the default users directory (win 7).
I launch the app using a shortcut that points to mros.adb. It has a default form it loads presenting the option of CLIENT, ADMIN, and a small button that prompts for a password and takes you to the control panel. That's how I would build the Shadow DB. If I turn off that from that loads automatically, it works. But it would be nice if I could have confidence that those tables are all closed because it's my believe this is what's hanging me up.

Suggest you try just one station to see if it helps. No need to network optimize a lot of stations to find out. Then you can take your time and do as many per day as you want.

Sorry to be a bit thick here Dennis, but is the default user directory actually on the users pc?
Typically you will have the runtime database on the server, and each pc will have its own environment of forms etc.
The data is the only thing flying about on the network.

                Re: Network Optimization Problem

Heck no. PCs don't have their own forms. Just local queries. BUT, I think I could resolve that if I could get the shadow database function to work. And I can, but I have to stop the default form from loading. Scattering all those forms and reports around..off the server..doesn't seem good to me. But if I understand correctly, maybe I ought to try that.

                  From help,

                  How Network Optimization Works
Network Optimization works by making a local copy on your hard drive of certain of your database application files (such as forms, reports, field rules etc.). When you run the application, Alpha Five accesses these files from your local hard drive, but continues to access the database records from the shared network hard drive. This results in less network traffic, and better performance.
I create a folder on the local machine in my runtime installation folder called shadow/myapp so I know where my files are located.

                  Example: C:\A5V11RT\shadow\myapp

I'm sorry I cannot help you with your specific problem. I've been using shadowed databases with many different database applications for over 10 years with no issues.

                    Re: Network Optimization Problem

Dennis, that's the whole reason for having a database version on the server, and the Optimised version on the local PC. That seems to be your speed issue as well. It is really NOT recommended to access and run from a sever version only.
If you change anything centrally - as on the server - your user will be made aware that there is a different version of - say a form - and they can resynch easily.

It's not possible for them to run away and change things. You still have control. It's managed on the server version.

Have another look at the documentation and try it on one or maybe two pc's as Stan suggests.

                      Dennis,

The only files on the server are the files that make up your database (workspace).
You can have a runtime on the server, but that would only be used to run your application while sitting at the server.
Each work station would have it's own copy of the runtime installed. Those runtimes would be running a shadow database of the database files on the server.

                        Dennis,
I highly recommend you invite someone to your computer at work to help you set up the shadow on workstation, with someone with logmein or similar

This is what it looks like in a Logical Diagram.
Loading the RunTime package on a Server allows users - or you - to install the application easily.
You would manage and carry out changes on the Server once the dev app is deployed to the server .
Changes can be replicated throughout the deployments quite easily.
