Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alphabet Button With Dropdown Letters

    HAs anyone attempted to create an alphabet button that when clicking on a letter, the letter opens as a dropdown. I realize a browse can be used but the real estate is a bit short and if the browse can be avoided, so much the better. If you have, was it a success? If so would you please share the code?

    Thank you,
    TYVM :) kenn

    Ken, have you thought of a Dynamic Tree on Letter Click?
    Or have I misunderstood?

      Re: Alphabet Button With Dropdown Letters

      Kenn,

      I just created 3 buttons on an empty form associated with a single table. I defined a varoiable on the form "vLetter". Under each button, I set the value of the variable to the button letter. I have a record list box showing first and last names, filtering the list by the 1st initial of the last name. I specified that the box should repopulate if the variable changes. Is this what you want to do?

      abc.jpg

      I obviously didn't get the "C" copied, but you get the idea...

      Code under the Buttons:
      Code:
      'Date Created: 08-Nov-2013 10:54:25 AM
      'Last Updated: 08-Nov-2013 10:54:25 AM
      'Created By  : Thomas Henkel

      Dim shared vLetter as C = "A"

        I would think using individual buttons should work. I'll give it a try.

          Re: Alphabet Button With Dropdown Letters

          Ken I have done this using far less real estate than alphabet button.
          A single button - "lookup" can create a dialog of all first letters in the field. Clicking on the letter sets the filter
          I won't write one for you but I'm sure you can follow from this example - I commented for you.
          Code:
          'OnPush button Prompt for a value using a list box dialog box.
          DIM Shared vfgroup as c ' variable for the group - in your case first letter
          DIM choice_list as c
          '-------------- replace a pre-entered list with a dynamic one with these lines
          DIM tbl as p
          tbl=table.open("invh_saved") 'could be table.current() - my preference is to open a second instance momentarily
          choice_list = "All"+crlf()+upper(tbl.RECORD_CONTENT_GET( "group" , "group" ,"unique_key_value()")) 'I Added "All", use same button to clear the filter
          'in the above line use left(field,1 for first letter - replace "group" with the name of your field
          tbl.close()
          '-------------- replace the entered list with a dynamic one in these lines
          dim defaultValue as c
          defaultValue = ""
          vfgroup = ui_get_list2("Grp",defaultValue,choice_list,1,.t.)
          grpttl="Grp "+vfgroup
          if vfgroup="all" ' in my case this will be the user selection to clear filter
          	vfgroup=""
          end if
          '----------------the following is just what I do upon selection
          vfreprint=.f. 'set off the reprint items filter
          filter = " (left(group,len([varC->vfgroup])) = [varC->vfgroup] )"
          qfilter = replace_parameters(filter,local_variables())
          Result = parentform:browse2.QueryRun(qfilter)
          I didn't pay too much attention to cosmetics getting this job done for myself as it is a tiny support button of my form - but please share back, if you can use it, what improvements you suggest. I have very basic functionality in dialog design.

            If I understand correctly, you have a button which opens a dialog containing individual alphabet buttons. In this situation, I would rather have the buttons displayed from the gitgo.

            Thanks for suggestion and it may come in handy later on. If my understanding is incorrect, please correct my thinking.

                  Re: Alphabet Button With Dropdown Letters

                  Ken you are correct.
                  In many cases I use the alphabet supercontrol and filter it to reflect only first alpha chars that exist in the table.

                  This example I use for listing only existing unique user entered category groups to select from. May have more than one character.

                  Since you mentioned a shortage of real estate it was a suggestion, as opposed to having 26alpha + perhaps 10num buttons.

                      Hi Ray,

                      By shortage of real estate, I meant all the room a browse would take to view the results, not the space the super control will take. I could simply create the buttons, each with their own query but then that may not be the best way to do it. Tom's approach bears some looking into.
