Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • function works with host app . but not remote app

Have developed an app that must run both on the development machine and on a remote system. Both systems access the same Alpha modules thru a shared "u:" drive.

The current app works on the development machine .. but one aspect of the app fails on the remote system. We have uninstalled the runtime on the remote and reinstalled and applied the patches .. the function still fails.

The aspect of the app that is failing is when you go to edit the data in an RTF field you get the error message that is attached.

Can anyone help with what it is telling me .. and what I need to do about it ...

    tanx .. Don

    Questions;
Have you got Runtime Plus installed on the remote?
You have 2 development licenses, so have you tried loading the second on the remote?
What happens if you create a RT version and put that on both machines, and have the database on the U drive? That would be a typical situation, and the Dev version will still work independently.

      Thanks Ted ..

From what I understand, I have unlimited licenses for Runtime .. I really do not know if it is Plus or not. How would I tell.

Sorry, this is my first remote app .. and I do not understand what you are suggesting .. would you be kind enough to provide a little more direction so that better understand what you are suggesting to do ..

Again .. thanks for your help ...

Don, I'm away from home at the moment, but Monday I will be able to send you more details.
Typically, you build an application, and create a distributable install. This is either files only, or the full install which includes the engine.
In your situation, I'd build a full install.
Run the install on the two machines, so you have the runtime engine loaded.
Pick the drive you want the data on.
Run the install on that drive also.
Go to m/c 1 and start Alpha. Locate the drive with the data and run the app ( the.adb file). It is your choice whether to use optimisation, but I would usually go that route.
        Same with m/c2.

Now you have two runtimes on separate pc's accessing the data on the U drive?

The development version can reside anywhere, but the changes you make must be uploaded to the U drive. Then, the changes can be notified and the latest version of the app will be used.

All of this is described in the help text.
What is VITAL is that the versions are thecsame for Rt and Dev.

        Later.

            Al thanks for the suggestion.

As the remote is a W7 system, I downloaded the msi and installed it (UAC turned off).

I the restarted the machine ...

Unfortunately, the result was the same.

I would install the development system on your remote app and then run the run time again and see if the situation resolves.

Don, your post title states that the function doesn't work in remote app. Can you show us the code you are using?

What if you move all the files to that machine in a new folder. Does the app run OK locally with the runtime?

Re: function works with host app . but not remote app

                    Ron, thanks for the thoughts.

One of the things that blow me away (and I have been in It for over 45 years) is that this application runs on the development machine (XP PRO SP3)(accessing the same remote files) and it continues to run. This application worked up to 1 week ago ( I smell a Windows update issue) on the remote W7 machine .. and now does not.

I took your advice and loaded the application files directly on the remote m/c in the C: Drive .. and ran the app. I got the same error message .. (see the first of this thread for an image of the error message) .. I still would like to know what this message is trying to tell me and then maybe we can fix it ..

I am running out of thoughts for this .. any help would be appreciated.. as this must run on this machine.

Ron, sorry, I did not answer your question .. the aspect of the application is that I am trying to update an RTF text box on a form (no scripting involved).

Re: function works with host app . but not remote app

Don, the next step for me would be to create a new workspace, a table with one or two fields, a new form with an RTF text box and to test it locally on both machines. If that doesn't work, then you could upload the test workspace to this board for someone else to try. If someone else can duplicate your problem, then you will have a better chance of solving this issue.

Re: function works with host app . but not remote app

Ron, I think I have found the culprit.

I really do believe that it is a W7 update issue ..

We have the ability to run both XP and W7 (God help me with W8) here.

                          I have now installed the RT on 6 different systems .. 3 XP . 3 W7 ..

Unfortunately, we keep all our systems current with Windows updates (blessing and curse).

The results of the test are interesting ...

All three XP SP3 systems ran the RT with no issue .. each W7 failed (not all the say version of W7).

This would indicated that this is a W7 issue and as it was running up to a week ago, there is a strong indication it was a W7 update that caused the problem ...

Now I must determine how to deal with this W7 issue?

Any thoughts here would greatly be appreciated .. as we have been eliminating XP machines....

                          Don

ps .. is progress not great ..

Don, it sounds like your on the right track, however; I can not tell you how many times when I thought I had an issue, that by creating a test workspace, the issue did not exist in my test workspace. Also, if your having this problem, and it is indeed a Microsoft update, then others should be having this problem. I have applications running on XP and WIN 7 machines. I do not think I'm using any RTF fields.

If you upload a test workspace that is failing on your WIN 7 machines and other board members are having the same problem, then you will have a better chance of fixing the problem. If no one else is having this problem, then you will know it's something unique to you computers.

I was hoping that installed what is missing. Godd that you've cornered it to Win7. What does MS say about win 7 and RTF?
