Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Current Time

    Hello,

I am new to alpha, I just bought alpha about a month ago. I am creating an employee time tracker and am trying to display the current time on my form but it defaults to 12:00.

I use the calculated field expression in my table: CURRENT(TIME()), in the expression window it shows the current time but when I try put this field on the form and run the form, I get 12:00.

    Please assist asap.

    Thank You.

    Re: Current Time

Current() generally has to do with a field or expression as in

CURRENT() returns the value of a field or an expression based on field contents for the current record.
    Not useful here.

Time() returns a character expression representing the current time. Said expression can be formatted with supplied parameters.

Now() returns the current date/time as a date/time value.

Have you discovered the Open Documentation menu choice under the Help menu? That's as ASAP as it gets.

      Re: Current Time

I believe that Now () reflects the time and date available from the computer so that needs to be correct if used in isolation.

So this is what I did.

I created a field in the table called time. Went into edit field rules, selected calculated fields, in the calculated field expression, I entered now().
Then I added the field in the form and when I ran it, it shows 12:00:00, which is the default I keep getting. I am sure I am missing something, but not sure yet, please help:)

        I have attached screen shots.

          Re: Current Time

If you make it a calculated field, then the time will change every time you open that record, and update if you save the record.

The expression you want to get the current time (without the date) is: "ctot(time())"

The way to keep it from updating each time you update the record is: if(mytimefield="",ctot(time()),mytimefield)

BTW, please do not name your field "Time". Name it edit_time, update_time, or similar. Words like time, data, temp, may be reserved words used by Alpha, and it makes it confusing to have an expression such as time=ctod(time()).

Excellent, except for the field name, what data type is this field?

Went into edit field rules, selected calculated fields, in the calculated field expression, I entered now().
Again, most excellent. Now check the documentation for

May I make a suggestion Mr Kent?
              1) add Private Messages to your Profile
              2) let us know your real name and location

What you are after is really very simple, and a calculated field is one - but not necessarily the easiest - way to achieve this.
There are many nuances to automating updates of a field such as you describe, but I have a sort of policy not to offer advice - for what it's worth - to Forum members without a comprehensive profile.
Been bitten once so never again.
If you decide to add some detail, I will be pleased to offer some solutions in a zipped Db.
