Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha Installer

    This usually works great.
However, adding 6 Word documents as additional files during the build - required for a Mail Merge operation - means that the launch Icon after installation does not deploy, and the Mail Merge does not seem to work as I had imagined it would. The build includes the templates for the Mail Merge, and it works OK in developer mode.

Leaving the Word templates out enables the installation to complete successfully and the launch Icon is deployed.

    Ideas?

Yes it has Al. One reason I have decided to not go the AA route.
I can get probably get around the problem by Bootstrapping my app.
John Willems has used a brilliant free installer so I will get a copy.

I will put in a plug for "Actual Installer". This is a perfect (and inexpensive) installer for Alpha apps. It even allows me to reference the Runtime as a download from my server so I do not have to include that huge set of files in my installation package.

How do you handle updates with it? In Astrum it is easy but their Autoupdater checks their website which goes down so you get error messages from time to time.

On the Actual Installer forum I read where Actual Installer cannot check for previous installed version of your app and you would have to do some crazy work around that included running a batch file.

If this is the case then Actual Installer is a no-go for me.

Yes I read about that and it is even talked about in the help docs but then I read that post so it left me wondering. I posted a question in that thread but I have to wait for the moderators over there to approve my post where I can hopefully get an answer.

I have downloaded Actual Installer but you cannot use the updater in the Free version so I cannot test it to see if it works like I need. And I hate to drop the cash for Actual Installer if it will not do it correctly.

The Astrum Autoupdater works so good except that it wants to check the thraex site to see if the Autoupdater is up to date first and with them being defunct it seems you cannot rely on their website being there. It is down now and is why I started looking for something else.

Steve I went ahead and bought it. Took me awhile to get my projects setup right.

Now I was testing the Downloader. When you set that up you can only specify one file so how do you configure it to download one file and then execute it or extract it? I tried using the commands to run the file after installation but it does not work. In fact none of the commands I have set to run after installation work.

I am going to post on their forum but it could be days/weeks before I get an answer so I may just shoot support an email as well.
