Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Default Entry Not Working

I can't seem to get the default entry to work as expected (or as I want). Never seemed to have a problem with this in the past.

    I posted a small example.

In the TimeHours dbf I needed to get information from the Consumers dbf. I couldn't see how to do this via table lookup, so I created two functions (see code) where I can supply the arguments and then get the information I need for the field. I can get this to work if I make the field a computed field, but that's not what is required. The user wants to be able to override the selection. So if the cost comes in at $20.00, he wants to be able to change it at input time to something else and allow the other calculations to work from there.

Not sure if you can see what I'm up against here, but I posted an example and any thoughts are appreciated.

    Charlie:

I don't see where you have set those two functions to run, so I'm not sure where the values generated by the functions are to be inserted.

Having said that and from looking at the functions, I don't see why you can't do this with a table lookup. Move the "Service" column before the consumer column so that value is available to the Consumer lookup then select the fields you want to populate and enter a condition in the condition column of the lookup for each field/service type. Just a guess.

Hmmm... I think I tried that, but I'll look again. The functions are in the Field Rules of TimeHours, ServiceAmt and WaiverCode. The idea was to use the function to populate these fields based on the looked up record.

      I'm open to any suggestions...

          Finnian,

I tried what you suggested. Many thanks for the file. But it is still not working as expected nor as the client would like.

They want to select the consumer, then select the Service and then, based on that selection for that consumer, have the computer input that amount into the Service Amount and Waiver Code fields. That's why I thought of using a function to lookup these values in an open dbf. But my way isn't working either.

Anything else I might be able to try?

          Thanks.

I wouldn't do it this way myself but that's just me. I moved the service field back to its original position. I combined the two functions into one and tweaked it a bit, then placed it in the OnWrote field of the Service field and I think it does what you want.

              OK. I'll take a look.

While I was doing so, I found another possible solution. I created 6 new dbf fields in TimeHours which will be filled when the user selects the Consumer with the amounts existing from that dbf. Then when the user enters the service they aare looking for, the Serviceamt gets updated with that amount. This solves the problem of the initial default and the possibility of the user making a change later to the record.

              Thanks for your help!

Way too complicated. Your functions were fine except that the query filter syntax was wrong so they didn't work. By combining the functions you can do it all from one place, get the desired result and the user can change the ServiceAmt and WaiverCode values after insertion if they wish. No extra fields or table editing required.
