Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Progressive Lookup Not Working as expected

I created a progressive lookup for my form using the following: http://support.alphasoftware.com/Alp...ive_Lookup.htm

This looks to work ok, but I am getting two things happening. First is, when I use this (via a button on the form), I get multiple instances of lastname (the search item) and this function seems to pick them all up in the display. Ideally, there should be only one instance of the name displayed. Second, I don't understand how to get my browse to filter for this once a selection is made.

Is there more information out there or can someone steer me in the right direction?

The link in your post is broken.

Suggest you check the help system for this topic: ListView with Progressive Lookup

If your lookup is running against a single table, the presence of multiple instances of the same lastname suggests the table contains multiple records with the same lastname. This would not be odd. The name "Smith" is very common.

If your lookup script is running against a set of tables that would be a different matter.

Sorry Tom. That was the link I was trying to point to. If you look at it though, it leaves off at the point where the result could be used to filter an existing browse on the form. Or perhaps I am still missing something? I've been successful in using the old Progressive function for years now, but that was just to locate one particular record and set the pointer there. In this case, I have a dbf with multiple instances of consumer names. I need to look at them uniquely, then filter my browse by that returned variable.

What I am getting with this lookup is the consumer name repeated for as many times as it is in the dbf. (i.e. one for each sale).

Can you see what I am saying? In the meantime, I will look at the raw code and see what I can come up with. My first thought was to use the argument generated by the lookup to act as the filter. Just looking to head in the right direction.

      Thanks.

OK. I did some more work and found out that after he Progressive lookup in the XDialog runs, I had to add some more code as follows:

        Code:
        dim records_found as n=0
        records_found= topparent.queryrun("consumer='" + conname2 + "'")
'Where conname2 is the name of the variable you were searching for.
I'm a little surprised that the explanation in the help, (which is pretty good step-by-step) didn't make note of this fact or just didn't add the code in. Not sure why.

Also, I have not, as of yet, cracked the unique issue, but maybe Tom Cone or someone else knows if this needs to be fixed or is just the way things work.

          Hi Charles,

Did you create a filter in the Record-List List Box? I have, left(Last_Name,len(Var->vc_name))=Var->vc_name.

Charles, the unique_key_value() function can be used to filter the records used to populate the listview control.
