Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Variable Scope revisited

I have an app I run from the server and I duplicated it and placed a copy on my desktop. I modified a script in the local copy to iterate thru an XD combo box called from a button on my form; by setting a shared variable in the OnInit event of the form and then incrementing the value in my script so the default value in the list will change each time the button is pushed while the form is loaded. This is a script I use for printing Timecards and it numbers the selected records according to shift - there are only 3 to choose from.

I then imported the revised form to the server so they are exactly the same.

Anyway it works fine in the local copy - but wouldn't do a thing on the server (accessed from my desktop) until I dimmed the counter variable as global. Nor would it work in the shadow copy when I updated it. Is there a reason for this difference I should know about?

    Re: Variable Scope revisited

It never fails - After I post here when I get so frustrated because I can' t fix something, invariably I discover the problem. It must be magic... Making the variable global did however allow me to find my error, which was easy it fix because I was incrementing the variable in the wrong place within the script and it was getting out of bounds as a result.

Which doesn't really help me understand variable scoping any better, but now there are a few links below that did.

      You are sooooo cool!
      Answering your own questions!
I am joking Robin. When you have a problem rolling around in your head, please be aware that they like company.
Add another one and you will likely solve the first one. Just a breakout to write the issue is sometimes enough.

        Hi Ted,
The weird thing was that the exact same original script did work correctly in the one app - my fix only messed up the errant app more. But once fixed, I changed both apps. It was a head scratcher for sure.

Also it seems a variable must be dimmed as shared if the XD is to use it?

          Robin,
Maybe I am not the best one at this, but due to errant things that happen in alpha, I did it a little different when in a dealership.

I made a copy of the master database complete(or as complete as needed), the worked directly on the master adb and files. No one got an update until I raised the version number, but I could refresh my own shadow while testing. Once I got the master the way I wanted and working correctly in my shadow, I would change the version number so everybody got it.

If something went wrong, I reverted back to the backup except data.

            Hi Dave,
What I am doing is a bit different. My local copy is not a developer app, rather it is the same payroll app I am using but for a different company. Whereas the server and shadow copies go together for the same company - make sense?

              Operation still applies.
I have an exact copy of all developed apps and a shadowed of those I keep in inventory(most are easy because there may be 30+ deployments for one). I can modify on my own systems and deploy as an update to all or just one. Mostly this is for a special report like a bank contract that only one car dealer ordered or a special delivery form. I upload the update for just them after I have thoroughly tested and only the one dealer gets it. It usually consists of a CR report.exe and the only changes to their alpha program is for the printing of the report(s). If it is for all the dealers, I give an update to all of them. That would be like a bankers contract for a new version that I normally supply for all dealers. There are no changes to tables for these updates.
