Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Xbasic conversion syntax

I'm trying to do pretty much what is shown in A5 video # M55. It indicates the need to convert \ characters but I don't have a clue what they mean.

Since my code contains a specific path with \ it says to convert: '\' -- '||!||' Can anyone help?
Also, is sys_open() valid in vb to open a pdf file?

    Thanks in advance

    Re: Xbasic conversion syntax

What are you trying to do? Also, did you post in the Mobile & Browser Applications section on purpose? I ask because that seems to be a desktop-centric video.

I use ajax callbacks to download .pdf's a lot if that's what you are looking for. I don't really get rid of back slashes either.

Ooops your right. I'm trying to do a desktop app with a grid that lists Purchase Orders and has a button on each row to display the actual PO which is in a pdf file.
It all works just fine as long as the pdfs reside in the local webroot folder. However, I have to store the pdfs on an external drive connected to that desktop via USB. I understand that javascript will
not work for an external call so I'm trying Xbasic to reference the files.

A5 video #55 seems like a viable solution but I can't figure out the syntax for the / character conversion. '/' -- 'll!ll'
Thanks in advance for the help.

          Re: Xbasic conversion syntax

You can use sys.open() with the explicit location of the pdf regardless of the drive. Why are you using webroot in a desktop app?

Hmmm. I am using an imbedded grid component on a form. In that case, what would the code look like for the button on the grid that would open the pdf file if it doesn't like Javescript?

You do need the PDFs in the web root.
Lenny has posted confirming this. It should not really be a problem, as a folder is a folder.
If it is an issue, a batch process to copy from the original repository to the web root sjould be quite easy.

Govindan has made a valuabe offer. Suggest you take him up on it and save your sanity.

                      Re: Xbasic conversion syntax

I would have to test for a desktop app, but for a normal web app the pdf does not have to reside in the document root, can reside anywhere on the LAN, but i do not know about extending that to an usb device, I have not tried that. I routinely store/save pdf and other application-generated files outside the doc root and then retrieve as needed, no copy step involved. I've posted the simple code on the forum before. I bet the same overall concept works for desktop except my method requires an A5W page to process the request, which wilk not work in desktop. Not at my desk right now to test.

my normal web solution does not work. sys_open also does not work (suprising).still testing. not sure it matters but is this going to be Runtime or normal Desktop?

Did not work much over the weekend, but confirmed, because it is a web component running on desktop, that sys_open() will fail (because the component is running in Working Preview), and that my normal web option fails (because you cannot run an A5W page in desktop). I do not use Desktop very often, can you normally open a PDF from a Desktop appliction? If so, how?
